Right tool for beaders December 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
Some great and inexpensive natural stones are inaccessible to beaders because they are not drilled for the wire typically used in findings, and hand reaming is such a pain. I was constantly tempted to buy a Dremel but the idea of being connected to the entire central power grid system with my right hand while my left hand touches a bead +under water+ always put me off, somehow. And then I ran across this little tool! I just finished drilling 106 five mm stones, moonstones and corals, enough for two small rosaries. Compared to hand drilling, the time spent was negligible, and the power used was not excessive at all: the two AA batteries still tested in the green, almost fully charged, when I finished the two sets of beads. At first, not owning the tweezer-like tool pictured in the packaging to hold the bead, my fingers took some beating, but I took a plain pair of pliers, coated the surface with a single layer of duct tape so that the bead would not be marked, found the right light hold, and that worked fabulously, not coming off under water, and not wearing out at all, apparently. For the rosary maker or beader using any quantity of stones, this is a real find. The entire world of pearls has opened to me, to make beautiful rosaries that give glory to our Mother in heaven.

Listen to others' suggestions about the pain involved with hand reaming. I went the route of hand reaming, but after spending hours and only getting four pearls done, I just couldn't see hand reaming as a long-term solution. I haven't seen any bead reamers that plug into an outlet, but like another reviewer brought up, why would you want to combine water with a live outlet unless you're aiming for homemade fireworks?!?

I initially purchased another battery-operated bead reamer that was about half the cost of this model. This "hobby" is becoming a little expensive, so I try and save where I can. Sometimes things work out, but in this case, it didn't. The cheaper model didn't have a brand name (no one would dare put their name on that piece of junk), the plastic casing was cheap and poorly molded so you could see through to the batteries, and a little plastic ring secured the bit. I ended up returning the junky bead reamer and purchasing this one.

The reason for the four stars and not five is that I ended up having to order more bits the same day I started using this bead reamer. The first bit I used got worn down and actually broke at the very tip. I tried to ream some more beads after that happened, but the reamer was less effective. So far, I've only seen replacement bits sold in packs of two (hint to Beadalon: sell replacement bits in bigger allotments or bulk) so replacing bits may become a little expensive.

I LOVE this reamer. I may be early in on my personal experience with this reamer, but seeing how I got through an entire string in less time with more ease...I am a big supporter. Given the amount of time hand reaming takes, how low the output is in comparison, and the physical toll it takes...I think this is going to pay off in spades.
