I got so much inspiration from this book just from leafing through..then upon further inspection, I just can't wait to try some of the designs within my crazy quilt projects. I took a beading class from the author so I had an idea the book would be useful. It it well organized and wonderfully done. I recommend it highly!

... this book may give you whatever little push you need toward working beads into that. There's a smallish section on 'Getting Started,' which offers not-nearly-enough info on beads in general plus a few tips on cloth-needles-thread. You'll need to use your own imagination and needlework experience and do a bit of experimenting. The 20-page section on techniques is the most useful part of the book. There are also 10 projects, only a couple of which I found inspiring or useful. The author could easily have dispensed with the rest of the book : the 'History of Beading on Cloth' (more like a brief overview) and the entire 'Gallery' (not projects, just pictures). The 'Resources' section is especially disappointing; the author chose to list only six bead shops, five of them on or near the west coast.

I found this book to be a great resource and it has great color images and specific easy to follow instructions that can be used by both intermediate or beginner alike. Great gallery shots of award winning designers. I am an aspiring couture artist and have found that most books don't cover or illustrate high fashion techniques or projects and this one is the answer to my prayers!!! A must read

This book is lovely to look at, with lots of information and well writen instructions. What I liked best was the beginning projects were easy enough to get me started, but the results look advanced. I especially liked the buttons--very creative and would look great anywhere.

Lots of Eye Candy and Technique Too,

I love this book. It has a lot of things to look at(most of the items in the gallery were not really to my taste but they were still interesting)and good little sections on technique which were not too impenetrable for me--I know embroidery and making jewelry, but not beading. Many books and articles on beading and beaded embroidery emphasize technique over design and this book doesn't have that problem. Similarly one is often advised to use all the same type and size of beads and the authors cheerfully tell you that they think mixing up sizes make the finished product more interesting. I agree. I will not be making any of the projects line for line but they have given me ideas for things I want to design myself, which I'm sure would please the authors.

This is my favorite beading book of all time. The instructions are simple and helpful and the examples in the gallery are exquisite. After five minutes with this book I'm hauling out my beads and needle, even when I'm exhausted from a day at work.

As with all Interweave Press publications, this starts with a historical overview of bead embellishments including some beautiful pictures and samples. There are several stitches shown with many texturing ideas offered for use in the various projects. They start from simple pocket fringe to a wonderful Sashiko Vest - assembly instructions are included with this project. A chapter is devoted to designing for bead embroidery with discussions of how stitches effect the finished look of a piece. You will also find information on color. The gallery is actually two sections. Two pages are devoted to a few of the Bead Quilt squares created in memory of the September 11th, 2001, attacks. The other section is lovely in that it show a few of the possiblities inherent in bead embroidery. Overall it's an excellent book and a good addition to any beader's, embroiderier's, or quilter's library. |
