5.0 out of 5 stars Must-have for budding beaders. A gorgeous book, October 5, 2004
This review is from: Beads of Glass (Hardcover)
This exciting book on lampwork beads is a must-own for anyone getting into glass beads. The first part of the book is a gallery featuring a number of artists. They give biographies--how they got into glass, their vision, and insight into their approach to this demanding art form. Their work, of course, is breathtaking; this is the best of the best. The photography is clear and brings each work to best advantage.

Then the second half of the book shows HOW the beads are made, from simple techniques to some very advanced use of foils, enamel powders, shapes, molds, encasing and sculptural methods. I was surprised how some of the beads were created. My favorites were window-etched beads. Some of the flowers inside these tiny marvels don't seem possible to be made of glass-they look real. Incredible.

Even if you don't make beads (I don't, at least as of yet) and if you collect them instead, this book is fascinating reading, giving insight and knowledge into this ancient and exquisite craft. Highly recommended for anyone interested in lampwork beads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beads of Glass, April 4, 2006
This review is from: Beads of Glass (Hardcover)
This is an excellent reference for the glass beadmaker. The images are inspiring and provocative, and many of the glass artists explain their process in a step by step guide in the second half of the book. After learning their processes for creating their art glass, it's easier to create my own unique pieces. A super book!

this book is clear, inspiring and very helpful, informative. It is especially so, if you are a novice beginner as I am. I have no difficulty with clearly, pictured demonstrations provided. Cindy Jenkins has two excellent glass bead books, and now I do too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Quality Book, February 15, 2008

I had seen this book in book lists of various suppliers but as there are so many books on bead making the title did not get my attention. After reading reviews in Amazon I bought the book and was sorry I had not purchased it earlier. This book is excellent in every way. The quality of the book is very high. The pictures are great. The selection of projects is very good as even beginners can tackle some of the beads and get encouraging results. I believe this book will appeal even to non-flameworkers who want to find out how beads are made. A minor criticism is that the artist interviews were a bit repetitive. I guess beadmakers think alike in more ways than glass work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, May 30, 2008

I took a weekend beginning beadmaking class, and my teacher sent me home Saturday night with this book. I read it cover to cover and went back the next day inspired by all of the talented beadmakers who were so generous as to share their years of experience. I made much better beads that second day, and have been hooked ever since. The biographies are inspiring; so many discovered beadmaking and and changed careers. The techniques are well illustrated with photos. I highly recommend this book to motivated beginners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, beautiful pictures for anyone who likes glass beads, April 26, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Beads of Glass (Hardcover)
This book has lots of pictures of beads that are so creative and beautiful it is a joy just to look at them. It could even be a coffee table book. It does inspire you to want to go make your own beads. It ranges from a lot of detail for the way most beads are made to an overview on some, but the pictures are complete in showing how each bead has been made. If you love glass beads you will love this book!

This book is a good combination of what lampwork beads can be, at their finest, who makes them, and how. It includes three sections, followed by a glossary and several indices.

This book includes three major sections. The first is a dozen pages of beads created by the artists in the book. A legend for these pages appears at the back to identify each bead and its maker. The overall effect of these pages is remarkable.

The second section presents each artist on a page giving a brief resume, a quote and several beads of the artist's making, usually including the bead(s) they are most famous for.

The third section shows lampwork techniques in beautiful still photography, by the lampwork artists included in the book. These include basic techniques and more advanced ones, including come of the artists' most important techniques, which is very generous.

If you are interested in who makes these beautiful works of art, these are some of the best and their creations. If you want an idea of how they are made, you will find the how-to section informative. And if you are new to collecting lampwork beads, this book will give you a good idea of what the best beads look like and the names of some of the best lampwork artists making them.
