NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, offers thousands of limited edition and one-of-a-kind gifts, jewelry, and home decor treasures handmade by master artists and artisans throughout the world. Teruka the scorpion is the guardian of the corn staff of life and must receive gifts before the harvest. Kupaima and Wereme portray the glowing images on a trio offering bowls. Bright beads, placed one at a time on dried guaje gourds, reveal ancestral Huichol beliefs. "The scorpion represents the duality of any power or skill. This because if we misuse ours, we sting ourselves as the scorpion does when it misses its target," the artisans explain. Artisan Info: Kupaima (Hair of Cornsilk) and Wereme (He Who Walks the Path of Wisdom) are a young couple, both artists. Their style is distinguished by dramatic color contrasts, while their treatment of light and shadow makes their work totally original, impossible to imitate. Both are descended from marakate, very powerful shamans, and both keep the traditional Huichol rituals alive. These traditions impart a great expressive energy to their designs, since the stories told in beads and yarnwork carry a millenary significance. Kupaima and Wereme are delighted to work with Novica, for their work receives the appreciation it deserves. Moreover, it enables the young couple and their four children to remain in their communities. There they can carry on the legacy of their ancestors in their art and their lives.
