5.0 out of 5 stars Necessary for the reference library if you hunt with beagles
If you are new to this aspect of hunting and dog handling, or want to "step up" your relationship with beagles to bring out their truly awesome hunting characteristics, then this book is for you. If you are an experience field trialer or show dog event person, then skip this book - it is for hunters who like to get out in the wilds with good friends and great...

this book might be a useful read for someone who has never seen a dog but other than that, don't expect much. the first 1/2 of the book is about choosing a dog and setting up a kennel. the second half is so-called training advice which is "put the dog down and let him figure it out." dont buy this book looking for training or hunting how-tos.

If you are an experience field trialer or show dog event person, then skip this book - it is for hunters who like to get out in the wilds with good friends and great hounds. Bill Bennett is like a favorite uncle, always there with a helpful suggestion, but not preachy regarding his methods. Respect the land and wild creatures, and train your beagles with consistency and kindness are predominant messages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Training manual, January 2, 2000
This review is from: Beagle Training Basics: The Care, Training and Hunting of the Beagle (Paperback)
I found his delivery to be clear and easy to understand. I purchased other beagle books and didn't find much on the training process. Here the author takes you from the first day of ownership to a finished hunting dog. I have tried to follow his instructions and now have a well started puppy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Training Manual, November 28, 2000
This review is from: Beagle Training Basics: The Care, Training and Hunting of the Beagle (Paperback)
This book does a good job of covering techniques owners of beagles might want to use in order to train their hounds for hunting or house pets. As the owner of a beagle, I found many of the tips useful and helpful. Although my beagle is not used to hunt game, the tips in this book worked well with my hound. I found this book to be a good teaching tool.

If you have ever hunted (with or without dogs) and if you have ever owned a dog as a pet, then you can basically skip the first four chapters because they deal with common sense issues that every hunter and pet owner should know already. Once the author gets into the actual training of the dog in chapter 5, he does a very good job of explaining exactly how it is that you should train him and what you should expect from him after certain periods of time. I found this book very helpful because after reading it I have a good idea of what I should be doing and when I should be doing it. I'll definately refer back to this book periodically as I train my beagle.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Basic for a Serious Rabbit Hunter, March 16, 2005
This review is from: Beagle Training Basics: The Care, Training and Hunting of the Beagle (Paperback)
This book pales in comparison to every book I have read on the subject of beagles and rabbit hunting. Purchase any Dave Fisher book. Get a copy of Breeding Better Beagles buy John Parks, Beagles and Field Trials by Wayne Price, or Breeding a Strain of Better Beagles by Tom and Velta Dorin. For great beagle story type books, I recommend the Everylasting Stream by Walt Harrison and Wilderness Patchwork by Willet Randall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good,Solid, Basic Information, November 9, 2009
This review is from: Beagle Training Basics: The Care, Training and Hunting of the Beagle (Paperback)
Training a Beagle can be a real challenge. Beagles can be stubborn especially if they get on a scent. This book provides insight on how to handle this great breed without a switch or constant yelling. The author shares his knowledge and experience and describes in great detail how to work with, not against what one would hope becomes a hunting companion and member of the family. The text provided tips I found of great value in training my own dogs. Not for an experienced houndsman, but for a novice or someone thinking about a beagle for companionship or the field, a very informative book.

2.0 out of 5 stars beagle basics, June 26, 2000
This review is from: Beagle Training Basics: The Care, Training and Hunting of the Beagle (Paperback)
basically, it only tells you to go out in the field and let the dog do his thing out there. unfortunately if you do not know what you are doing you will never see any wildlife(maybe making to much noise, shouting) it missed many gook pointers that I think a lot of people could have used.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Go Ahead and Try!, September 29, 2002

As a beagle's gramma, I can tell you things about a beagle that would curl your hair. Thankfully, I do not have to for Bill Bennett has done just that.

As for training a beagle: ha! It's useless, futile, hopeless. Need I say more? Didn't think so.

HOWEVER, a beagle makes a lovey-dovey pet. Just don't try and train 'em.

P.S. They'll work for food. Might I suggest cheese tidbits?
