We own a beagle, so when my son saw this book at his school library, he had to check it out. He brought it home, and we read it together, and enjoyed it and learned a lot! It has great photos, and an eye-catching cover with the red checkerboard design. I would have rated this book a 5, if it did not have a reference to the 12 thousands of years ago part. It is just a personal thing with us though. I am sure this author believes in evolution, etc., based on some of the content. Since we do not, I just take the opportunity to talk to my child about the differences of opinion on that. I just don't want my child to automatically assume something, because an author does, in regard to an issue like that. So, while I would have rather that have been left out, it was still a great book. On a different note, the binding, and cover are excellent. These are my favorite kinds for long lasting durability. So a good choice for schools or librarians, or just families that read a lot.
