A touching and funny nature novel,
By Jen Dutcher (Hillsboro, Oregon USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beakless Bluebirds and Featherless Penguins: Observations of a Naturalist (Paperback)
This is a touching true story about a nun, Sister Barbara Ann, who recues and adopts two injured bluebirds. Her feelings about the birds and the story of their recovery is the thread that holds the book together. The novel also includes several other anecdotes chronicling the lives, trial, and foibles of different animals and people, from an encounter with a scentless skunk named SweetPea to a nun who spreads joy through decks of cards. Overall, the novel is a tribute to the beauty of nature. I would recommend it to anyone who loves nature, animals, or people.

Sister Barbara Ann is, apparently, a meticulously trained naturalist as well as a professional artist and an unusually articulate writer. I have shared this book with many others, and each person has wanted to own a copy. It is a little polished gem.

Loved this book. Especially because it's about my own area and I knew some of the places she wrote about. I recommend this book for anyone interested in birds and wildlife. Very entertaining.

This review is from: Beakless Bluebirds and Featherless Penguins: Observations of a Naturalist (Paperback)
I loved this book. It is a journal of the author's experiences over one year in raising two severely injured bluebird fledglings, and in observing and interacting with the natural environment(both flora and fauna) in which they were found. The author has a deep, spiritual appreciation of the natural world and a fine eye for its nuances. Her appreciation is loving but not sentimental and also reflects a scientist's understanding. In addition, her writing is clear, succinct and effective, and at times deeply moving. I recommend this book to readers young and old, scientists and laymen and to all those who seek to connect on many levels with our natural world.
