Hilarious Farcical look at Irish life,

"An Beal Bocht" means "The Poor Mouth"..which is an expression meaning to grumble and complain about one's lot in life. And the author does just that throughout the book in the most humorous manner possible. He is also poking fun at the styles of other, more serious Irish authors, using their expressions and idioms in a hilarious context. If you are familiar with Irish songs or stories, you'll recognize a lot of this humour. An example would be that one day he goes to the rosses to rob all the houses - the houses are all empty because the men are all wrecked at sea and the women are all wailing on the beach "Who will save my Patrick? ". This really pokes fun at almost all Irish lore. I highly recommend this book to Irish speakers and also to beginners. I'm a beginner and I've used the book to learn a lot about the language. You can get the English Translation "The Poor Mouth" by Flann O'Brien (same guy, different names) and compare the two books sentence by sentence to learn. If you don't speak Irish, get the English version and have a great laugh. If you are of Irish ethnicity I think you will find it even funnier because you'll recongnize a lot of the humor based on your own cultural experience.
