5.0 out of 5 stars My second
The first such light, which had only 2 AA batteries, lasted over 10 years. When it died, I hoped I could find an exact replacement. This is made by the same company, but is designed a bit differently, and it's black instead of pink. This time it uses 4 AA batteries, which makes it a bit heavier but should also make the light last even longer.

3.0 out of 5 stars I loved it before it broke my heart
I was thrilled when my Beam N Read light arrived. I LOVED it when I was knitting at night. But after a couple of hours the bulb started getting weaker and weaker. I tried to replace the bulb with the one which came with the light. I couldn't get the current bulb out and was afaid to I might break it if I kept trying. Now I will go to a Batteries Plus and see if they can...

The conecpt of this is brilliant. Instead of trying to attach the light to the book (how's that gonna work if I want to read The New Yorker or The New York Times in bed??), this one attaches the light to you, facing out at the book or magazine or newspaper or knitting--or if you're in a motel room, it will help you find your way to the bathroom.

It looks a little gorky, but it works like a charm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best reading light ever! Won't keep the spouse awake, June 25, 2007
This review is from: Beam N Read Classic Hands Free Reading Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
This reading light has saved my marriage! I can read perfectly with it and not bother my spouse. In fact, the Beam N Read light is so good, that I now prefer to read with it instead of the "big" reading lamp next to my bed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect needlework light, February 12, 2007
This review is from: Beam N Read Classic Hands Free Reading Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've tried just about every needlework light there is and have never found one that was just right until now. It hangs around the neck and sits flat on the chest without getting in the way at all. There is absolutely no shadow at all on my counted cross stitch fabric, which has always been a problem and no cord at all to get in the way. You can get an A/C pack, but I wouldn't want it. The way it is with the battery, you don't even know it's there. You just have really good light.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Light to Love, July 29, 2010

I bought this light back in 1998 before a trip to Africa. It's a great travel light especially if you share a room. I can read (comfortably) as long as I like without distrurbing others.
Unlike a lot of other "book" lights, it's sufficiently bright to read without squinting.

The second bulb just burnt out so rather than replace it, I'm upgrading to an LED version for improved battery life. I just hope it's as good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just "Ok"!, March 23, 2007
This review is from: Beam N Read Classic Hands Free Reading Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this yesterday to help bring my crocheting a little closer and also to brighten my working area. The light itself works well. I like being able to direct it and the base of the light that rests against your chest is smaller than the other craft-type lights I saw.

But the main reason I purchased this product was for the three magnification lenses that came with it. There are three intesities: 2X, 4X, and 6X. I thought this would really help my eyes from straining to see small stitches.

WRONG! The lenses are not like a clear, smooth magnifying glass, but they have ridges and lines. The magnifying works, but there is no way I could sit and read or even do crocheting for any length of time without my eyes getting tired from looking thru these lenses.

I will be returning this product today and getting one of the more traditional types.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect little light, September 26, 2011

This light is particularly useful during power outages or when traveling. The neck strap enables me to use it as a portable, hands-free reading light and flashlight in a hotel, and it is great to have during power outages. It provides more useful personal light than a flashlight since it has a reflective mirror and disperses the light well. I own 2 of these myself and am buying more for gifts.
