I purchased these buckwheat hulls to make my own version of a Sobakawa pillow. Buckwheat hulls as a filling keep your pillow cooler at night, but the versions offered commercially are smaller than American size pillows so I decided to make my own.

I purchased down-proof ticking fabric to make the pillow (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0074A8V6E/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details) . I cut it to 21 x 36 (approximately queen size after sewing), added purchased piping for strength at the seams, and it took about 7 1/2 lbs of hulls to fill it to a comfortable level for my sleep preferences. You don't want your pillow to be stuffed too full or it will be too high for sleeping. Play with the amount of filling by basting the opening in the pillow closed and then trying it. When you finally find the right amount of filling for you, permanently sew the pillow opening closed. I would think one 5 lb. bag would be ample for a standard size pillow.

I also added a pound of dried lavender (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003K7EZBA/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details) to the hulls for a pleasant, sleep-inducing aroma, but this isn't necessary.

These buckwheat hulls have no odor at all and were free of any debris or foreign materials. They come shipped in a thick, plastic bag and there was no spillage in the box.

The end result is wonderful for me! My pillow stays cooler than my previous feather/down pillow and it conforms to my head instantly. I am a side sleeper and it is perfectly supportive for a wonderful night's sleep.

I had 2 water pillows from my chiropractor that were so heavy that they were a constant source of amusement for my husband. He teased me unmercifully because we could barely move these things. I emptied out the water and split the buckwheat hulls between the 2. Now I have 2 of the best comfortable, most extraordinary pillows I have ever owned. I no longer have the shooting pain in my neck. I will also buy from this seller again.

Exactly what we wanted. Shipped quickly. Great product. Great alternative to buying a new pillow.

I found the hulls far dustier than anticipate, and though comfortable, my allergies would not permit me the use of them for sleeping. I would not recommend these hulls for people with allergy problems to sensitivities.

No smell aside from the pleasant slightly nutty smell of buckwheat hulls. No dust, full hulls and not a lot of broken pieces. Will repurchase from this vendor when I need more to refill my pillow again.

This company is cool and very personable. I have made many toddler pillows and stuffed them with these beans. I feel so good that my child and the other children in my life that I love lay their heads next to organic cotton stuffed with these organic hulls instead of chemical synthetics that off gas. In my research its also important to provide a toddler with an appropriate sized pillow and you can put more or less hulls in as needed. I originally tried millet but it gave off a lot of dust that I don't think is good to breath. In addition to these hulls, I bought the cylinder pillow for under my knees back sleeping and put some additional hulls in to make it more firm. It totally helped lower back pain! Invaluable!

I made a cylindrical nursing/sleeping pillow using these 5 pounds buckwheat hulls plus approximately 1-2 pounds that I already had from a small pillow. I love it! No more shoulder or hip ache in the morning and I am pretty sure it will make an excellent nursing pillow. 5 pounds can be enough if you are of short stature (need a shorter cylinder) or want to use it only for nursing.

I made a pillow out of these buckwheat hulls and have been waking up without neck aches for the first time in years.
