Quick tip 2: Long-press on the keyboard icon to try the different layouts

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q. Where are the (international) accented characters like for example ä/ü/ö/ß etc.
A. To turn on accented character support please disable "Long press for numbers and characters" in the settings menu.

Q. Are the keys on the specialized thumb keyboard in portrait layout really 1.25 times wider than a normal keyboard?
A .Yes they certainly are. To see this, take the "QWERT" and the "YUIOP" keys from screenshot 2 and picture them together in 1 row. You will see that the row "QWERTYUIOP" (the top row of a standard qwerty keyboard) is wider than the screen. (Note also that the q is smaller than the other keys. This is done to make the t better accessible)

Q. How do I enable the keyboard / I don't see any keyboard when I have downloaded the app.
A. Please follow the instructions in the app called "thumb keyboard" in your app drawer. In short, activate the keyboard in the general android settings (section "keyboard and language" or "locale and text").
After that long press on an edit field, like for example an email you are composing, and select "Thumb Keyboard from "input methods".

Sometimes we are lucky with an app we download for our Android because it shouts 'professional design' and 'quality'. And Thumb Keyboard is one of them. It's a highly customizable, well designed, predictive THUMB, ONE-HAND and FULL keyboard app (yes, you get all three).

The developers not only provide on in-app setup screen that explains in detail and how to install this on Android 2.x and Honeycomb (separate sets of instructions) but there is also an embedded link to a Web side that has even more detail. As I proceeded with the setup, additional tips/warnings popped up, usually at the exact time I needed them.

Rather than gush about what you get with this app, let me calmly enumerate the options and let everyone decide:

- Separate keyboard sets for whatever kind of device you may have: phone, 7" tablet, 10" tablet.
- 28 themes, all free, some may require a download.
- SIX separate keyboard layouts: thumbs, right-hand only or full keyboard, each with or without customizable function keys.
- Sound - six custom sounds, from 'dvice default to typewriter to water drop.
- Sound volume
- Vibrate (or not) on keypress and vibration's strength
- Key popup feedback on/off
- Background if you want something other than the themes provide
- Adjust keyboard's dimensions - height (portrait or landscape mode), width... too many options to enumerate here
- Custom symbols

And there's more. This is a predictive keyboard where the most likely words are displayed as you type letters. Even better, and this is the difference between intelligent design and something done in a hurry, little details are addressed.

It's a great keyboard and the hybrid split layout for portrait view works great on larger (4") screens. In my experience, it hasn't been any faster or slower than my other favorite keyboard, smart keyboard pro.

To the reactionary "unsafe app?" reviewer: the disclaimer about capturing the text is displayed by android because, well, it's an input app. Of course the things you type in it could be stolen if the app was malicious and intended on doing so. This is not the case with this app or any other reputable input app here or on the google market. Try any add-on keyboard and you'll see this is the case. Too bad you left a bad review of a developer's hard work because you're too dumb to research it yourself.

I used to think my 7" Android tablet was small enough to use with a standard configuration Android keyboard. When Amazon dropped the price on the Thumb Keyboard to 99 cents, I figured I'd give it a try. This is really great. In landscape mode, it displays all the alphabet keys and number keys at the same time so I no longer have to switch between modes. Even in portrait mode, the text prediction is much better than any other keyboard that I've tried. Thumb Keyboard doesn't have a "swype" mode, but that never works well with word predictions and swyping on a tablet-sized screen is kind of cumbersome anyway. Thumb Keyboard has lots of customization modes (like alternative layouts) that I may look into, but the basic layouts for each device size are probably best for most people.

This is by far the best keyboard I've ever used, but amazon ruins it by not having more timely updates, they need to let the developer have control when it comes to updates especially for a keyboard app, they are currently on version 4.5 with this app while we are still stuck on (amazon app store), practically 2 whole versions, and i would have never known this had i not been browsing the google play store, this is where i think amazon is short ending us as customers by not updating our apps. There are important bug fixes and extra features we're missing out on due to amazon!

As a thumb keyboard this application works well. Plenty of thought has gone into the key position and size. With several language choices and layout variants. Its strange that a Dvorak variant is missing for English when are Azerty and Qwertz are present. As an Android user I want to use this keyboard. As a Dvorak typist I cannot.

This keyboard is perfect for tablets and I refuse to use anything else after 2 mins of use. I have a Nook Color which is a 7" tablet. This keyboard has a ton of option for from phone layouts, two 7" tablet layouts, and bigger tablet layouts. It also lets you set a portrait and a landscape layout of your preference. The major beauty of this keyboard is that you don't have to struggle anymore which keys in the center of the keyboard anymore no matter how big your device is in landscape or portrait. It split you keyboard in half making a letter keys reachable on either side of your screen. The keyboard also looks quite elegant. You can choose all type of skins from honeycomb, ipad, windows7, gingerbread etc. Your guaranteed to find something you like. Another feauture I like is the ability to adjust height of keyboard so you can make it how tall or short you want. The keyboard itself is quite smart also. It has good text prediction and the fastest easiest way of using numbers I've seen on a keyboard.

Bottomline: Must have if you have or ever plan on having a tablet. Also a must have if you have a large screen phone such Evo, Thunderbolt, or Dell Streak. Just a really great keyboard no matter how you look at it. Its a steal @ 2.50 but even more so on sale @ a measely 99c
