Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-This latest installment about the irrepressible youngster is sure to appeal to her fans as well as to readers craving more Ramona Quimby-type books. Although Beany isn't quite up there with Beverly Cleary's famous character, Wojciechowski does have a solid grasp of modern-day children. Beany can't wait to be a flower girl in her favorite cousin's wedding. Actually, she's excited and scared at the same time. What if she has to wear a really ugly dress? What if she throws out all the flower petals before she gets to the end of the aisle? Beany's worries and concerns are endless. As readers will discover, Beany's best friend, Carol Ann, is a fount of not-so-helpful information. Still, most of the child's fears turn out to be unfounded and even the minor scrapes she gets herself into turn out fine. This young heroine proves to readers that things are rarely as bad as they might anticipate.

From Booklist
Gr. 3-5. The third in the series about Beany (Bernice Loraine Sherwin-Hendricks) finds her worried about her role as flower girl in her cousin Amy's wedding. She doesn't have enough money for the wedding present she wants to buy, and she fears her dress will be too full and scratchy. Her dress turns out to be just perfect, but then Beany wears it to school, getting it dirty and losing a button in the process. The dress is repaired, but on the day of the wedding, Beany is not sure she can make it down the aisle. Simple and satisfying, this is a good choice for readers past the beginning-chapter-book stage. Susanna Natti's pen-and-ink illustrations, which appear on almost every page, are full of good humor and just the right complement to the text. Ilene Cooper

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll love Beany!, October 29, 2000
By Daisy (Baltimore, Maryland) - See all my reviews
Beany is the kid everyone of every age can relate to. She worries about everything! She's timid, curious, and sweet. Reading about the ups and downs of Beany's life, and how she conquers her worries, will give you hope that if Beany can do it, so can you! Beany is the genuine article. You'll love her, I promise!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beany's the best!, October 4, 2000
By Jean (Rochester New York) - See all my reviews
I loved Beany and the Dreaded Wedding! Children will relate to Beany's worries when she is asked to be a flower girl in her cousin's wedding - will the dress be ugly and frilly, will she trip going down the aisle? The author is always sensitive in handling Beany's worries. Beany's "know it all" friend Carol Ann is always close at hand to "help" Beany solve her problems. The contrast between Beany and Carol Ann adds just the right tension which is so common in childhood friendships. Beany is delightful! The book is sprinkled with humor which will appeal to kids and adults alike. Throughout the story, the reader can sense that Beany will work out her concerns and a happy ending is right around the corner.

Children ages 8-10 will love Beany and will be eager to read more of her stories!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful series - highly recommend!, July 8, 2008
I can't say enough about the "Beany" book series. From the moment my daughter opened her box from Amazon containing 3 of the books in the series - she couldn't put it down. My daughter (7 years old) likes to read - but I usually need to remind her to read daily for at least 20 minutes (especially during summer break). Well, needless to say, I didn't have to remind her once. =) I couldn't believe how much she loved the stories... she would stop reading every so often and give me a short rundown of what was going on and the funny parts. I would look over at her every once in a while and see her smiling and giggling. What a great feeling to not have to nag my kid about grabbing a book and reading! LOL

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice normal kid.
Beany is a nice normal kid. She's not as loud as Ramona Quimby but she's just as earnest and concerned about the world around her. Read more
