"Beany might well be a descendant of Beverly Cleary’s Ramona. - BOOKLIST

In BEANY GOES TO CAMP, school’s out, but Beany does not want to go to Camp Onondaga. Readers will laugh in recognition as Beany braves a
buggy world of morning bugle calls, rowdy mess halls, and dreaded swim
tests in this familiar tale of angst - and unexpected accomplishment - at summer camp.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-Another beginning chapter book about Bernice Sherwin-Hendricks, better known as Beany. She loves the relaxing, don't-have-to-do-anything of summer vacation and isn't interested in going away to camp, even though her friend Carol Ann loved Camp Onondaga. Then her parents announce that Beany is going for a week and readers follow her as she leaves (very much against her will), meets her bunkmates and cabin counselor, and learns the routine. Beany helps a homesick bunkmate, Skye, and the two campers swim, help the cook, and participate in other activities. This is an enjoyable book for children just beyond easy-readers. The characters are not much more than two-dimensional figures and it's fairly obvious that Beany will end up loving camp by the end of the week, but her friendship with Skye, her consideration for others, and her experiences make this an appealing read. An enjoyable addition, illustrated with numerous black-and-white line drawings.

From Booklist

Gr. 3-6. Big-hearted Bernice (Beany) Sherwin-Hendricks passes through another childhood rite-of-passage with flying colors. After being pushed into a week at Camp Onondaga by her overbearing friend Carol Ann, Beany's negative attitude undergoes a change as she meets shy, lonely cabinmate, Skye; gives the hard-pressed camp cook a helping hand; encounters baby birds, horses, and annoying boys; and passes a personal test by learning how to dive from the lake's platform. Along the way, she delivers a wealth of direct, Ramona Quimby-like observations: "Each camper has to take a swimming test the first day so the leaders can figure out which kids might drown." The snub-nosed figures in Natti's drawings are usually smiling, and readers of this engaging, comfortably predictable adventure will find themselves doing the same thing. John Peters

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Beany Goes to Camp (Paperback)
I read an awesome book! My book is called Beany Goes to Camp by Susan Wojciechowski. It is about a girl named Beany and another girl named Skye. At first they don't know each other, but then they get to know each other and become best friends.

The story begins at Beany's house, when her parents are dragging her out the door to bring her to Camp Onondaga because her friend, Carol Ann, told her parents that she should go. Carol Ann says it's lots of fun. Every kid has to take swimming lessons, but Skye doesn't know how to swim. When camp is almost over, Skye learns how to swim and Beany learns how to dive.

There are many characters. The three main characters names' are Beany, Skye, and Carol Ann. Beany is a nice girl and is kind to Skye. Skye had no friends, so Beany was nice to her. Skye is very shy. She only has a dad as a parent. Carol Ann is Beany's friend, and she wants to win all the contests.

My favorite part of this book is when Skye and Beany both wish they will see each other next summer at Camp Onondaga.

I like this book because it shows how kind someone can be to someone they just met. I don't think Skye could have lasted at camp without a friend like Beany. They really had a lot of things in common. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes kindness and friendship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, Sensitive and a great read, January 11, 2007

This review is from: Beany Goes to Camp (Paperback)
I recently discovered Susan Wojciechowski's Beany series and I love them! Beany is a believable character, with whom I think many children can identify. Often her worries and troubles remind me of things that bothered me when I was a kid. As a teacher, I plan to use this book (and the other Beany books) with my grade 2 class. It has a great flow, is engaging, and has many lessons on appropriate problem-solving and kind, considerate behavior without that actually being the focus of the story.
