Manufactured by the premier company in the solar business (they have installed over 125000 solar systems), these panels have been efficiently heating swimming pools since 1972. Solar Bear's surface is fully whetted by pool water insuring the most efficient panel available. Extra large 2-inch headers do not slow down your pool's circulation and ensure excellent solar heat transfer to your pool's water. Smaller 1-1/2-inch headers can reduce your pool's circulation and cause solar heating to be compromised. Solar Bear systems are comprised of a single extra-large 4-feet by 20-feet collector with no couplings or connectors. The system is made of U.V. stabilized polyethylene that is very tough and will last many seasons under direct sunlight. The systems come complete with an integral bypass valve, so you can turn them on and off as needed. Also included are two 6-feet hoses and four clamps to hook the system up to your filtration system. Solar Bear panels can be mounted on the ground, on a rack, or a nearby roof. Complete installation and user's manuals are included. 10-Year Warranty. Put solar to work in your pool and swim in a warmer pool without the huge expense of heating it. Note: For panels to heat optimally, they must receive unobstructed sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

We bought one of these 4x20 ft panels with the bypass value and it works great. On a sunny day in the mid-80's it will raise the pool temp at least 5 degrees, that's on a 24ft round pool of 13,500 gallons. So, two days in a row will raise it about 10 degrees. We are swimming while the neighbors are sitting it out. My husband did build a raised structure for it to sit on since we didn't want it on the ground. It faces south, the angle can be adjusted, and he covered it with chicken wire. Before the chicken wire was added we had trouble with cats climbing on it and it also blew off in a storm. We haven't had to put it away for the winter yet; that will be another adventure.

I purchased the Fafco Solar Bear pool heater last season. I only purchased one panel for my 15x30 oval pool figuring it would heat my pool about 5-6 degrees which is adequate for my needs. Sure enough, on sunny days it raised the pool temperature about 6 degrees. Installation was fairly easy; however, the downside to the solar panel is that it must sit out in the sun to to heat the panel enough to ease rolling or unrolling the panel. I used a couple of sand bags to hold the panel open. Rolling up the panel in the fall was a bit of a challenge for the same reason as above and required two of us to roll and strap it for storage. This season upon startup, I noticed a leak in the panel. Fortunately, a spot of hot glue has temporarily fixed the leak and and more care with installation should prevent leaks in the future.
