This is the third book in a series by this author -- these books represent the absolute best information on bear attack survival available anywhere. If you spend any time in bear country, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to read these books. I have a set at home and a set in my cabin in the Colorado Rockies for guests. The black bear population in the mountains within 40 miles of Denver is increasing. They are not cuddly.

First of all I want to say you have GOT to get all three of Shelton's books. They compliment each other quite nicely. These books outline in no uncertain terms the risks and myths of bear encounters. If you are going into bear country you NEED to read these books. They are written by a man who has lived and worked with bears and gives lectures to government employees and others who work in bear country. He know what he is talking about. You need some kind of protection, bear spray at the minimum. He tells you how to use it and when. The biggest myth about bears is that black bears are timid! WRONG! READ THE BOOKS!

The best writers, it has been suggested, do not "tell" you the Truth, instead they "show" you the truth. The reason is that "demonstrated" Truth is seen more independently and to a greater degree is free from the author's bias or incompetence, and therefore gives you a clearer understanding of things.

So it is in the case of this very fine book on bears, which demonstrates the Truth ever so logically and objectively and also honors bears as the magnificent creatures they are.

While Mr. Shelton may never win any awards for purely literary achievement (at least not by the sanctimonious standards by which such awards are made), he does understand bears. And this book has a ring of truth more clear, more profound and more consistent, than most books I've ever read.

I reviewed one of Mr. Shelton's other books "Bear Attacks: the Deadly Truth" and many things which are true about that book are true about this one. One is that not everybody will appreciate everything Mr. Shelton writes. In particular, people who cannot face the reality that bears are NOT our cute and furry "friends" but can be vicious, cunning and extremely dangerous, may not like reading about it. Another is that this book also clearly demonstrates the tragic consequences of the stupid idea that animals are more important than people, or that they have rights, (which, being incapable of making responsible, moral decisions respecting others' rights, they most certainly do not!) Particularly dangerous is the idea that people should not participate in the ancient and eternal relationship of "prey and predator," which is to say hunting. Hunting is a natural process and always has been. And both you and your children (not to mention livestock and pets) are always safer in bear country where responsible, controlled hunting is permitted.

Written in a style similar to his other books, this book is easy to read, informative and highly entertaining. And it is Truthful! A must read for anyone venturing into bear country or interested in bears.

These bear books can be redundant at times.. this one is a real good read..
You can never know enough about these oversize eating machines.
You don't know if you should love them or hate them..
I guess respect is the middle ground.

All you have come to believe about the bear is wrong , this book will take them apart fact by fact. If you love the outdoors like my wife and self do and you will EVER be in bear county GET THIS BOOK. We now have all three of the his books what a wealth of real life no BS this is what happens. Not I heard this or that. Mr. Shelton has lived it and has gone to those how have been attacked and found out all the facts to learn from them.

I am an environmentalist who considers himself extremely open-minded. It is office our James Gary Shelton doesn't like what he calls preservationists and his book reflects that. I would classify the book as dirty biology and the book should properly be titled "Hunting Attacks II - Realities of My Hunting Trips and My Need to Preserve My Economic interests. He is obviously a man who knows how to kill - the hunter understands the bear from this point of view. He lives in the region of Bella Coola with a license to kill bears and has no respect for his surrounding environment. Just another redneck who is trying to make a buck while hunting. In this book, he desperately makes an attempt to justify his hunting outfit and his clients.
There are other books on the market that tackle the bear problem with compassion and not for economical reasons - google them up. I live in a bear area and in 4 months there were over 600 complaints. I still feel this is a people problem Mr. Shelton. We are encroaching on their territories - if we can't live with them, get the hell out - the answer is not to kill them and wow, make money at the same time. The arrogance of this book is influencing the wrong people but fortunately it is not sold in many stores in the Vancouver area as some stores refuse to carry it. We live in a free country and he has a right to misinform innocent people who just want to learn about bears and he does a good job doing that. Bottom line: he makes you fear bears and justifies his killing with erroneous biology hoping to win votes. Unfortunately, the knowledgeable people have no reason to purchase this book but tourists and all, may purchase it and that is ashame. Mr. Shelton has so many years of experience killing bears, too bad he didn't take the time to study and learn about bears. He believes instead of male bears killing savagely a bear cub, he should be allowed to kill that bear for profit. Don't buy the book and do the research. You will look at bears in a different way, appreciate them and not even go into the hunting for profit argument. The author is a smart man by trying to manipulate the reader - try not to take what he has written seriously. He is a good salesman though.
