Jim Henson's continued genus! His puppets are so much better for children than cartoon shows. They are easier from a neurological standpoint.
Love the characters, set, music, songs & animation. Bear is terrific and should be a TV show. I agree that this is not a hard-core potty training video. However, my daughter loves it and wants to sit on the potty after...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not that motivating, but cute
My daughter, 2 1/2 doesn't want to watch it very often. I think it's cute, but it just doesn't seem to motivate my kid. My 1st choice in movies is "Potty Power". It's been pretty effective. Maybe this will work better for you, if your kid really loves Bear in the Big Blue House.

This video has 3 chapters and only one is about the potty. The other 2 are completely unrelated. I agree with one of the other reviewers that the "Shadow" segment is weird and patronizingly "Bronx-like". The shadow puppets are a nice idea but, should tie in with the theme of the show and be relevant. I wish the entire thing was about potty training. Overall, this is a fun, upbeat video that may not have heavy instruction but builds awareness. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Potty Training Playtime, November 9, 2006

This review is from: Bear in the Big Blue House - Potty Time With Bear (DVD)
As with all the Bear in the Big Blue House videos this DVD was done with fun music, great characters, and a lot of tact. If you are in the trenches of potty training or just starting this is a really fun and relatable DVD for the our little friends. We loved that fact that they even addressed pooping on the potty. This is often an issue not dealt with on other videos and often the hardest task to master. Other issues that Bear deals with are staying clean and dry, accidents while your trying to get there and you have to stop playing and go. The song "You're a Toileteer" has been sung over and over by the whole family. Of course we will love not talking about the toilet, someday. But since that doesn't seem to be anytime soon...We love our Bear!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Cute!, October 9, 2005

My son really enjoyed watching this video. It doesn't really go into detail about how to use the potty, however, it made my son interested in potty training!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bear is a hit with my toddler!, March 28, 2007
This review is from: Bear in the Big Blue House - Potty Time With Bear (DVD)
My toddler wasn't familiar with Bear in the Big Blue House but became a fan after this dvd! She really likes the potty episode and the other 2 episodes that are included on the dvd. She asks for more bear after watching it every time! The potty training episode is light hearted and yet covers the gamut of emotional concerns a toddler may have about transitioning from diapers to using the potty. She isn't potty trained as a result of course, but I think the dvd is a great tool for encouragement for sure. She's 22 months and still may have a ways to go before ditching the diapers. This dvd is tasteful, cute, and really a pleasure for me to see and not get tired of too! We really like the other 2 episodes included on the dvd too, sometimes she watches all 3 in one day!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not focused on the potty enough, January 30, 2007
This review is from: Bear in the Big Blue House - Potty Time With Bear (DVD)
Considering the title of this DVD, I was expecting to view shows that were focused on using the potty. The first show featured on this DVD addresses issues like going potty even if you're in the middle of a fun game, accidents sometimes happen even if you're trying to get to the potty really fast or when you're sleeping, etc. This is all great, but the next two episodes don't relate to the potty at all - at least not if you're a two-year-old!

I do think this show is very cute. My son likes "Bear and the Big Blue House" in general, but this was not very motivating with potty issues. If you're looking for a real potty-training aid, I highly recommend "Potty Power."

This review is from: Bear in the Big Blue House - Potty Time With Bear (DVD)
I purchased this DVD last September when my daughter was 2 1/2
and we were ready to start the potty training process. She loves it! My husband and I thought it was fun, too. Unlike another viewer, we also enjoyed "Shadow"'s segment.
My daughter now calls toilets everywhere "potty chairs", which I think is cute. We also bought the Bear in the Big Blue House "Going Potty" book, which she keeps in the bathroom near her potty chair.
Did this help with the actual potty training? Probably not, as we still don't have it together yet, but are farther along than when we started. I'm not really pushing the issue until she turns 3 next month (advice from "The Girlfriend's Guide to Toddlers").
Thus far, this is the only potty training DVD we have purchased, so I can't compare to others, but we really do have a good time looking at this one.

I'm a huge fan of Bear and already wrote a detailed reveiw of his "Storytime with Bear" DVD (see my other reveiws), but this video deserves it's own reveiw based just on the main episode, "When You Gotta Go." This episode is the best Potty training story I've ever seen. Even though my 4 month old is too young to even think about toilet training, she watches this video intensely.

The Potty episode includes two motivational (and catchy) songs, "Potty Chair" and "The Toiletteers". The story supports the ideas of using the bathroom as being a sign of growing up, but also reassures children that even though they are getting older, their parents will still "be there for them." Bear discusses the difficulty that children have in interrupting their current activity in order to go to the bathroom, the confusion a child may feel when being in an unfamiliar setting (such as a restaurant) and having to use the facilities, and even the embarrassment experienced when a child doesn't make it in time. Moreover, he makes the accomplishment of being toilet trained sound like a special club (called the "toiletteers") in which children look "great in their underwear" (as opposed to "saggy uncomfortable" diapers).

Once again, this video is entertaining for the adults who get stuck watching it multiple times a day. I've yet to meet an adult who did not laugh out loud at watching Tutter the mouse on the toilet or chuckled at Tutter's admission that he sometimes "likes to look at picture books" while going to the bathroom. The "Potty Chair" song is so clever that one has to giggle as well.

The other two episodes on the DVD, "If At First You Don't Succeed" about practicing and pride in accomplishment and "Call It A Day" about using bedtime rituals to look back at your day are likewise entertaining, but are outshined by the Potty episode. It's a stretch to say they follow the same theme as "When You Gotta Go", but I imagine it's a bit difficult to find more than one episode in a series concerning the toilet.

I give 5 stars for the Potty episode, but the other two episodes receive 4 stars. This DVD is well worth the purchase even if you only watch the first episode, an entertaining and brillant story aimed at making children comfortable with the natural process of toilet training.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for kids who already like Bear, September 26, 2005
This review is from: Bear in the Big Blue House - Potty Time With Bear (DVD)
My daughter already loves Bear and all the other characters in TBBH. This was a great way to link the potty with a show she loves instead of just having introduced to her by her parents. Super catchy songs, so watch out parents. This will not train you or your child, but is a great intro and reinforcer.

My daughter has been a huge fan of bear since she was tiny. I had heard several good things about the Bear potty episode, and decided what the heck. After reading the reviews on some other potty-type DVDs I saw one called "potty power" that had gotten good reviews, and decided to give it a try too (plus it put me over the $25 so I could get free shipping haha). I must say she liked the bear DVD, but potty power gave us IMMEDIATE results. From the first night she watched potty power she has not had an accident since--I think something just "clicked" with her.

IMO, Bear was fun to watch, but it didn't really lay it all out there like potty power did. I didn't feel like it was blunt enough for my daughter, but that was just my experience.

Anyway, if you are looking for a potty DVD, I would give bear a try, but also maybe go check out Potty Power as well.
