4.0 out of 5 stars The Bear Detectives, November 8, 2003

This review is from: The Bear Detectives: The Case of the Missing Pumpkin (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books) (Hardcover)
We start of this story by hearing that Farmer Ben's first prize pumpkin can't be found anywhere. "Do not worry Farmer Ben. The BEAR DETECTIVES will find it again!" But before they can get to work finding the pumpkin, Father Bear (and his old dog Snuff) appear wanting to help. Father Bear and Snuff then rush off along the road with very little clue of where they are going

Father Bear and Snuff lead the Bear Detectives all over. Before turning the case over to the Bear Detectives, they manage to check out a "cow, brown and white. Checked out a scarecrow after a fight." "Checked out a haystack. Three pigs in a pen...put the [hand] cuffs on Farmer Ben's hen."

Of course, as soon as Father Bear turns over the case, the Bear Detectives manage to find the thief, who really wasn't a thief, right away. As it turns out, Mrs. Ben had 'stolen' the pumpkin to make pumpkin pies, and everyone (including the chicken handcuffed to Father Bear) got a pie to eat.

This book flows nicely, and is told in rhyme. The pictures add a lot to the book. They exaggerate on the misfortunes of poor Father Bear as he searches for the pie. They also are bright, colorful and funny. The story is very cute.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Bear Detectives, October 29, 2002

This review is from: The Bear Detectives: The Case of the Missing Pumpkin (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books) (Hardcover)
The Bear Detectives is an interesting story for young readers. It is a mystery that teaches you how to, step by step, solve a mystery, in this case being the case of the missing pumpkin. In the story, the bears' friend, Farmer Ben, Lost his prize-winning pumpkin, which he thought to be stolen. The bear detectives got out their detective gear and hurried to the "crime scene". Upon arriving, they noticed how shaken up Farmer Ben was. Of course, he had lost his favorite pumpkin. The bears don't waste any time, they get out their Bear Detective Book and read... "Lesson One", it says. They follow the steps in their detective book to capture the pumpkin thief. They search everywhere in search of the giant, prize-winning pumpkin, but its nowhere to be found. After all of their searching and all of their lessons, they go to Farmer Ben's house for Dinner, there they solve the case and find out where it had been all along. The book teaches children how to get along while solving problems and how to check out all of the facts before making accusations. I highly recommend this book, its exciting and well worth your while, it'll keep you jumping after every page!

4.0 out of 5 stars Meh., April 3, 2009
This review is from: The Bear Detectives: The Case of the Missing Pumpkin (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books) (Hardcover)
This isn't a "Moral Lesson" Berenstain Bears book, it's an early reader.

As you might expect, Papa Bear does everything wrong, and the kids find the pumpkin thief. It's a pretty light read even for a beginning reader - some of the rhymes are a bit forced, and Papa's wrongheadedness is a little overexaggerated - attacking chickens?

But the kids like it, and it is simple for a beginning reader, and that's the important thing.
