4.0 out of 5 stars The Bear Detectives
We start of this story by hearing that Farmer Ben's first prize pumpkin can't be found anywhere. "Do not worry Farmer Ben. The BEAR DETECTIVES will find it again!" But before they can get to work finding the pumpkin, Father Bear (and his old dog Snuff) appear wanting to help. Father Bear and Snuff then rush off along the road with very little clue of where they are...

3.0 out of 5 stars A first mystery book...
This is a nice book for young readers which follows the Berenstain Bears through the innocent story of searching for a missing prize pumpking. The story is in rhyme and is a funny little mystery for a small child, which also like several Berenstain Beginner Books strains the importance of reading and learning, as the kids follow the rules of their detective manual...

Father Bear and Snuff then rush off along the road with very little clue of where they are going

Father Bear and Snuff lead the Bear Detectives all over. Before turning the case over to the Bear Detectives, they manage to check out a "cow, brown and white. Checked out a scarecrow after a fight." "Checked out a haystack. Three pigs in a pen...put the [hand] cuffs on Farmer Ben's hen."

Of course, as soon as Father Bear turns over the case, the Bear Detectives manage to find the thief, who really wasn't a thief, right away. As it turns out, Mrs. Ben had 'stolen' the pumpkin to make pumpkin pies, and everyone (including the chicken handcuffed to Father Bear) got a pie to eat.

This book flows nicely, and is told in rhyme. The pictures add a lot to the book. They exaggerate on the misfortunes of poor Father Bear as he searches for the pie. They also are bright, colorful and funny. The story is very cute.

This review is from: The Bear Detectives: The Case of the Missing Pumpkin (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books) (Hardcover)
The Bear Detectives is an interesting story for young readers. It is a mystery that teaches you how to, step by step, solve a mystery, in this case being the case of the missing pumpkin. In the story, the bears' friend, Farmer Ben, Lost his prize-winning pumpkin, which he thought to be stolen. The bear detectives got out their detective gear and hurried to the "crime scene". Upon arriving, they noticed how shaken up Farmer Ben was. Of course, he had lost his favorite pumpkin. The bears don't waste any time, they get out their Bear Detective Book and read... "Lesson One", it says. They follow the steps in their detective book to capture the pumpkin thief. They search everywhere in search of the giant, prize-winning pumpkin, but its nowhere to be found. After all of their searching and all of their lessons, they go to Farmer Ben's house for Dinner, there they solve the case and find out where it had been all along. The book teaches children how to get along while solving problems and how to check out all of the facts before making accusations. I highly recommend this book, its exciting and well worth your while, it'll keep you jumping after every page!

4.0 out of 5 stars Meh., April 3, 2009
This review is from: The Bear Detectives: The Case of the Missing Pumpkin (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books) (Hardcover)
This isn't a "Moral Lesson" Berenstain Bears book, it's an early reader.

As you might expect, Papa Bear does everything wrong, and the kids find the pumpkin thief. It's a pretty light read even for a beginning reader - some of the rhymes are a bit forced, and Papa's wrongheadedness is a little overexaggerated - attacking chickens?

But the kids like it, and it is simple for a beginning reader, and that's the important thing.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Bear Detectives: The Case of the Missing Pumpkin (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books) (Hardcover)
In this book, the bears are looking for Farmer Ben's missing pumpkin. Papa Bear is also coming along to help, but he becomes more of a hazard. They look all over, following the clues they pick up, and the ones their dog Snuff does. And they finally find out who it is, it was Farmer Ben's wife. She made the pumpkin into pie. As they are looking for these clues, they are having fun. I liked this book as a child because it was a mystery, and I had to try to figure out who too the pumpkin.

The story is in rhyme and is a funny little mystery for a small child, which also like several Berenstain Beginner Books strains the importance of reading and learning, as the kids follow the rules of their detective manual. However, just like in other Berenstain books, they undermine the parental figure, cause the dad is not very smart and keeps making mistakes, which is why I didn't give it a higher rating, as I think that it's ok to make parents appear human and not perfect, but it's another thing to make them appear totally useless.

In THE BEAR DETECTIVES, by Stan and Jan Berenstain, Farmer Ben's First Prize pumpkin goes missing and the Bear Detectives are called upon. Though guess who was standing about, you guessed it, Papa Bear. He takes his old dog Snuff this way and that, trying to find the pumpkin theif. In no time flat, he finds--A Cow?? A cow, then some pigs, and after that some pigs. Still not having learned his lesson yet, Papa Bear makes one mistake after another. A scarecrow, a haystack, and even a bunch of hens! In the end a crook was caught, though is it really a crook, or is it not? 3 stars out of 5.
