If you determine that you need pepper spray this one works. Originally, when I was terrified of bears, I bought this spray to defend myself in case of a bear encounter. Now that I have lived around bears for four summer seasons at a bear viewing lodge in Alaska and understand them better, I still carry pepper spray. With a little practice and understanding of the medium this can be an effective defense if you should need it. It improves your attitude of confidence, and an attitude of confidence is often your best defense. I don't expect to use mine anymore, but having it with me and accessible makes my outdoor experiences more enjoyable. Like many bear experts say, it is not brains in a can, but it is lighter than a gun, takes less expertise and won't kill anything, including you.

I am an avid cyclist who puts in around 6,000 miles per year in rural middle Tennessee. On some roads in the mountains, you can be confronted by a lot of loose dogs -- and pitbulls, rottweilers and chows are the preferred breeds (along with large packs of mixed breeds). A couple of years back, I was bitten by a pit bull who worked in a pack with two other dogs. The two other larger dogs got in front and slowed me down while the pit bull sneaked up behind and bit my leg. I was told that the animals would be restrained from that point forward, but I bought Counter Assault before returning to that route.

As I topped the same hill, the same three dogs came at me using the same attack tactics. I hit the front two dogs with a blast (in the face) of Counter Assault each. They both ran away immediately. The pit bull came up from behind and got a blast in the face. He backed off about forty feet and was sneezing and frothing heavily from the mouth (from the pepper spray) but kept chasing at a distance. About 100 feet later, he attacked again. I got him with another blast in the face and he slowed enough for me to escape.

As a cyclist, Counter Assault is a little cumbersome to carry, but it is worth it. Three weeks ago, I wasn't carrying Counter Assult. A chow attacked without warning and heavily mauled my left thigh and knee. Fortunately, the owners heard me yelling, ran to the scene and called the dog off me just in time. Another thirty seconds and the dog might have killed me. He had me on the ground and was going toward my head/throat.

I am definitely carrying bear repellant from now on. Counter Assault works!

Quick shipping. Still has long shelf life, which was my only concern after deciding which brand to get. After a lot of research on the internet, this appears to be the best deterrent by far. I haven't had to use it, but like a fire extinguisher, it will be well worth the money in a worst case scenario.

Item came right on time. I didn't get to use it yet, but felt more confident around a yearling Black Bear because of the product.

I haven't use this yet, and I hope I never will need to. But I live more in Cougar Country than Bear, although there are Bears around. I just thought a little extra precaution will be worth it if ever them Critters come a'calling.

I hope I never have to use this, But if I am am not carrying a weapon this does make people feel more at ease.

The cannisters arrived promptly, and look just like they should. If I find myself needing to use them, and survive to tell about it, I'll come back here to let everyone know about it.

I had the chance to use this Bear Defense Spray on two occasions, one was during a promotional radio comedy show. The Bear was tame and I got $50 for Spraying it on a Bear. Didn't seem to work at all, it sneezed a few times but it didn't do a thing. If it hadn't been tame (w/ a trainer), I would have been torn to pieces.

Occasion two was when I went hiking in the mountains. I came across a brown bear near a small creek and he came at me. I froze, reacted calmly, took the Bear Defense Spray and used it. The only thing it did was startle the Bear, it retreated but eventually came at me again, but I had time enough to run back to my truck where I hid for safety.

Bear adrenaline, either from male 'heat' or anger, is enough to override the effects of a little pepper spray burst, just like a man on drugs or alcohol can still attack if hit with pepper spray.

In all, I wouldn't recommend these Bear Defense Sprays at all unless you are dealing with a Bear cub.
