This review is from: Bear and Son 6 1/2" Genuine India Stag Bone Damascus Steel Upswept Skinner with Leather Sheath (Sports)
Hey guys,
I've been collecting knives since I got my first Swiss Army Knife when I was 10. Usually, I stick to folders, throwers, multi-tools and tactical/survival knives from well known makers like Benchmade, Buck, SOG, Muela, Spyderco, Cold Steel, Leatherman etc...But, I've always liked damascus, being fascinated by their patterns and the skill required to make them, however I could never afford them. Needless to say, I was pretty glad to have seen the ad about this knife from Bear and Son. At under $90, I felt it was a steal considering that this is a genuine 512 damascus steel knife, with a stag handle that's made and designed 100% in America. Where can you get that kind of value without having to resort to using cheap materials and mass production? First thing I noticed was the fine packaging this knife came in. It came in a metal container, with foam padding. Usually, makers just package their knives in cardboard. I remember buying knives costing 3 times as much which aren't packaged nearly as well as this. I know the packaging has nothing to do with the product itself but I tend to believe that it adds to the ownership experience. It's rare to see companies, especially lesser known ones, spending time and effort in these little extras. Opening the package, you're greeted with a very well made sheath. Not too many frills but who needs it in a utility knife? Taking the blade out, I was actually surprised. I haven't really seen damascus steel in person so I had some expectations which may not have been very realistic. For one thing, I expected a blade with very clearly defined patterns in black and silver. Although still clear, the patterns on this blade need closer inspection to appreciate the intricate detail. Another thing was that I thought both sides would have identical patterns. However, with further research, I now know that it's pretty normal for both sides to not be exactly the same. Another minor detail is that the logo isn't very clear. You can hardly read "BEAR MGC USA." Next thing is the size. At 6.5 inches, it's not large by any stretch of the word. However, it's size makes it more practical for everyday carry. Bowies are great and all but for some reason, walking around with one hanging off your belt puts people off. The handle pretty much is as it looks in the ad here in amazon (just not as yellow). It really has a different vibe and feel all its own. Although not large, the grooves allow it to be gripped pretty easily without it slipping. One thing I would have preferred however, is for the metal parts (besides the blade tang) to be polished like it is in the sides, giving it a more finished look. Overall, I'm very very pleased with this purchase. Again, I can't stop looking at the blade and it feels good to hold. I personally feel that this would work very well as a display piece and a utility knife at the same time. True, there are some minor finishing issues, but who can complain at this price? Still, I highly recommend this knife to collectors looking into buying their first damascus.

This knife is of the very highest quality. I had bought one some years ago as a gift and always wanted one for myself. The price was very good. Shipping was fast. I would highly recommend this product and company to any who are serious about fine knifes.
