About the Author

Rotraud Illisch retired as a teacher of mentally handicapped children after she had four children of her own. She always loved drawing and crafts, and started a business making and selling cloth dolls when her children were small.

In 1987 she made her first teddy bear and soon became a professional bear maker. She taught bear making classes, sold her bears at craft shows, and created her own designs. When the German teddy bear scene was established, she became affiliated with other well-known makers. She was eager to try new things, and as the years went by her own personal style of bear making was developed. She makes classic bears, character bears, miniatures, realistic bears, and all kinds of other animals and has received prizes and TOBY nominations.

A natural extension of her teaching is writing about bears. In 1995 she published a booklet about making small bears and miniatures. Then she began A Bear of My Own for "advanced bear makers who want to learn more than the things shown in books for beginners." She says "I wrote the book I would have liked to read after having made my first bears." The book grew with the feedback she received: drawings were added, changes made, and it was translated into English.

"I am in touch with bear makers all over the world now and have learned that those who take bear making seriously always take any opportunity to learn more about the subject. I have no fear they will moan about 'just another bear making book,' Illisch explain."

This review is from: A Bear of My Own: Manual for Bearmaking and Designing (Paperback)
A bear of My Own is an excellent guide to the craft of bearmaking. The language is easy to understand for the less experienced. Rotraud Illisch's guide for pattern design is excellent and easy to understand. The whole bear is taken into prospective from design to placement. This is a wonderful book for bear designers.
