Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-K-Wilson does it again in this new installment about Bear and his forest friends. This time Bear is bored and wants to throw a party. When he discovers that he has nothing in his cupboards with which to whip up a feast, he becomes despondent. But his trusty pals come to the rescue, all offering up something for the festivities. Bear is thankful for their generosity but still feels sad that he has nothing to make. Once again, his friends help him understand how much he is loved by telling him that his stories are the most valuable contribution to the party. The illustrations are as detailed as ever, and children will want to reach out and hug Bear because he is so fluffy and welcoming. The rhymes are pleasing to the ear and move the story along. This is a great choice to share in storytime when discussing gratitude, sharing, or thanks.-Cass Mabbott, Seattle Public Library, WAα(c) Copyright 2011. Review

"Told in rhymed verse, the text reads aloud smoothly. As the animals arrive with their edible gifts, a repeated line, 'and the bear says thanks' gives children a chance to participate in the story. The book’s large format allows plenty of space for the illustrations, and Chapman’s lively acrylic paintings make the most of it. Even preschoolers new to the series will be charmed by this big, gentle bear and his generous woodland friends."--Booklist

"Who would not love this cuddly, soft, furry creature? A tender tale of friendship, timed for Thanksgiving." (Kirkus)

"Chapman’s glowing acrylics create a joyful atmosphere in a story that obliquely references Thanksgiving, but functions as a reminder of the importance of gratitude any time of year." (Publishers Weekly)

More About the Author

My life is a series of lessons and moments that see me to the next lessons and moments. Some moments are sweet, some scary, some a blur gone too fast and forever missed. I write for children because all of these steps started there, in childhood, and that sense of wonder, keen curiosity, and the ability to see things much kinder and more magical than they actually were, fades as time passes and years and experience claim your naivety. For me it is a feeling only rekindled when I am creating books, stories and poetry.

My children, family and friends are a great inspiration to me, and the support of my readers is a tremendous honor. It is always my desire to entertain children and encourage them to think about and explore their world, and the worlds beyond, embrace creativity, and love learning for the duration of their life. Knowledge comes through words, so for me literacy is the foundation of education, and it bears the fruit of intelligent and empathetic citizens of this world and humanity.

We just got our copy of this "Bear" book today. It is a very sweet story with a great "message" about sharing and also the value of good friends. The rhyming was just a tad awkward in a couple of places, but that is the only reason I took off a star and really I wish I could take off only 1/2 a star. It is still an EXCELLENT book - as are almost all of Karma Wilson's. I am saving this book for my children for the first cold, fall day as a special treat when we can't go outside to play.

Our family has most of the Bear Books--This is a fine addition. I bought a second book to give to my nephews for Thanksgiving! My 8 year old and five year old both never tire of listening to these stories about the Bear and his cute woodland buddies.

We have "Bear Snores On" which my 3 year loves. I didn't realize there was a series until I checked out Amazon. We decided to purchase "Bear Says Thanks" and he loves it! Great story and message along with warm, colorful illustrations. Book was larger than I expected (and with a cover!) which was a bonus.
