Our twin daughters had just turned 3 when we got them this book. I liked the art work and it came highly recommended by the store owner. The girls really liked it, it even helped them want to wear underwear one day when we were going back and forth about wanting a diaper versus underwear. The cover has real underwear on the bear and girls love touching that, they like it at the end when all the animals are wearing underwear and so many of the pairs are crazy looking, even the light suspense at the animals wanting bear to open backpack got the girls going. As for the readability aspect, it is a little lacking, there is a lot of verbage that is in white bubble form characters that does not lend itself well to being read to little kids at bed time for example, but as a beginning reader for then the girls are old enough this will be a great book. The 5 star is for the cute/fun/crazy-but-not-too-out-there factor and the fact that it really engaged my girls.

The book opens with "Bear" and his friends playing hide and seek; they all disappear and leave "Bear" in his hiding place. It is only when he gets hungry and goes home in order to get something to eat that he finds his friends. They never apologized for leaving him in the woods. Which seems like a small thing until the peer pressure of the next scene.

Then the main character "Bear" is pressured by his "friends" into opening a backpack that he found on the road. It bothered me that he caved into their wishes when he was uncomfortable doing so instead of making his own decision.

Later in the book "Bear's" friends use words like "Lame" and "Dorky" to describe some of the underwear that "Bear" finds in the backpack.

IDK, theres part of me that likes the story, and "Bear" is a very likable character. But some aspects of the story, although easy to relate to, are not things I want to reinforce.

I had several problems with this book. First of all the plot is disconnected, they start out playing hide and seek, then the bear is hungry, then all of a sudden he's trying on random underwear from a stranger's backpack? Second, this book makes it seem OK to find something of someone else's, take it without trying to find the proper owner, and use it. Who wants their kids to learn this? I don't want my children trying on used underwear, but mostly I want then to know it's not OK to take something that's not yours. Bears friends make several rude comments that I would never want my children to repeat. Lastly, and most importantly, my kids were not entertained. We finished the book and my preschooler said, "that's weird." Well said!

I came across this book while looking for touch and feel books for our toddler. I picked this up and was immediately surprised to find that the "touch and feel" part of the cover was the bear's underwear. Really? Let's touch and rub the bear's underwear? With all the effort that teachers, parents, and public safety workers put in to teach children, especially preschoolers, that their private parts and underwear are private and not for other people to touch, this book's design seemed poorly thought out. I get that it's a cute bear in underwear, but I think the publishers should have thought this book through. Add on the peer pressure and rude comments from bear's friends, and bear's trying on all the underwear from a strange backpack in front of them and this book definitely isn't one that will support your efforts to keep your kids safe and learning self-protective behaviors. I guess you could use it as a tool to discuss "What not to do" or "Things that are not ok".

I first came across this book in the store, and it had me rolling. Love, love the illustrations and funny dialogue. Probably even more fun for adults than kids!

My husband and I found this book in the store first and laughed so hard, but then it was out of print in those places, so you gotta love Amazon - I ordered 3 more from here! My daughter is only one ,but she loves the story and the bright pictures. I've also gotten it for all of my friends whose children are potty training. Such a hilarious story, really a fun one for any kids!!

This is a hilarious book and is well illustrated. We actually got this book for my son when he was potty training and it helped him to finally potty train because he wanted to wear "big boy" underwear. Thank you Todd Doodler for your work and helping us overcome a quite stressful and messy time in our lives.
