Book Description

March 13, 2001
The year 2000 saw a phenomenal increase in bear attacks on humans. Both black and grizzly bears across the continent attacked humans at an astonishing rate. Is this the result of continuing intrusion into wild habitats by humans, or are other invironmental or climatic factors at play? In Bear vs Man, writer-photographer Brad Garfield chronicles resent bear attacks through dramatic photographs and text, interviewing the victims who survived, and the search crews of those who didn't. Along with the attack stories, Garfield discusses the various reasons for the alarming increase in the attacks, instructs readers on new methods and equiptment that can protect people during an attack, and offers tips on how to behave traveling in bear country so as not to become a victim. Lastly, he compiles his knowledge of how to photograph bears in the wild while still remaining safe and causing no harm to these amazingly powerful animals.

"As soon as she me, I saw her black eyes glare at me and then without warning she dropped and became a blurred brown object barreling at me. I instinctively went into a defensive mode. I immediately dropped, face down, and placed my rifle underneath my right elbow...she went for my head and started chewing. She wasn't able to get my whole head in her mouth, so when she bit down, her teeth would grade and slide off my skull."

Terry Everard (survived grizzly attack in Sept. 1992)

2.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous advice, March 22, 2005
This review is from: Bear Vs. Man: Recent Attacks and How to Avoid the Increasing Danger (Paperback)
Garfield tell photographers they should never approach a sow with cubs, but says nothing about the danger of approaching a solitary male or female. Is it OK to approach a solitary bear? No. At some point you'll encroach on the bear's personal space and force it to fight or flee. You don't want to provoke a charge from a male grizzly, do you? You don't want to drive a female black bear away from berries, acorns or some other food source, do you? It's dangerous and unethical to approach any bear for a photograph. If Garfield doesn't know this, you can imagine all the other mistakes in this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bear vs Man, August 31, 2001
This review is from: Bear Vs. Man: Recent Attacks and How to Avoid the Increasing Danger (Paperback)
This book chronicles recent attacks in a straight forward but not very interesting or original way. The stories of the attacks are told second hand as they were told originally. I know this as my husband is one of the featured chapters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chronicles many recent bear attacks, May 17, 2001
This review is from: Bear Vs. Man: Recent Attacks and How to Avoid the Increasing Danger (Paperback)
There's been an increase in the amount of incidents involving bears and men, and Brad Garfield's Bear vs. Man chronicles many of these recent bear attacks, with photos and stories told by victims who survived. Insights on bear behavior accompany advice on what to do when a bear is encountered.
