From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3--Young children are introduced to percussion instruments made from familiar everyday objects--bowls, wrenches, horseshoes, jump ropes etc. It is a celebration of sound as found in words, rhythm, and objects. Cartoon animals in the book are the art work of Roy Doty, an award-winning cartoonist/illustrator. Kathy Teck has created challenging tongue twisters. Following the reading of each rhyme by narrator Geoffrey Holder is a piece of rhythm percussion music utilizing the objects. This combination may be used to encourage rhythmic speech, phonetic reading, and invention. The activity guide has terrific suggestions for making instruments, ideas on how to make good sounds and mallets, a description of each of the instruments used by the Hit-It Band, and biographies of the creators. The book and activity guide are not durable. Technical quality of the tape is good. The music includes a wide variety of sounds patterns, making it useful for music teachers, especially in small segments. Parents would need to supervise young children in creating instruments, and should caution them about what to beat.
