Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Five beds are waiting for five bears. Big Brown Bear comes first and settles sleepily in the one big bed. Then gradually the little beds are occupied by Yellow, Fuzzy, Calico, and Floppy Bear, and they all snuggle down and go to sleep. But wait! What is that sound? "They heard the wind./They had a scare./They're afraid to stay/in their beds over there." So, all five end up cuddling in Big Brown Bear's bed. Set against pages of mostly blue and lavender shades, the soft pastel acrylic illustrations picture the huggable cubs perfectly. A sweet bedtime story for tots, simply but very well done.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VAα(c) Copyright 2011. A soothing reading primer and cozy bedtime story.

More About the Author

My middle-grade novel Ship of Dolls became available in August with terrific reviews. I'm delighted that a reviewer at School Library Journal compared my character Lexie to Beverly Cleary's Ramona. Ship of Dolls is based on a true event in our history. In 1926, American children collected more than 12,000 dolls which were sent to children in Japan to create friendship, in the hope of preventing future war between the two countries. Dolls of Hope, telling the story of the Friendship Dolls through the eyes of a girl in Japan, will be published in 2015. Artist Kelly Murphy has created distinctive covers for both books.

My little bears are becoming world travelers. I've received copies of the books translated by a publisher in Finland into four languages, Finnish, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian. I love knowing children in those countries are enjoying the stories, too.

My editor sent pictures of the bears featured in Japanese bookstores. Artist David Walker, creator of the wonderfully huggable illustrations was invited to visit by our Japanese publisher. He and our editor visited bookstores in Tokyo and Osaka where the bears were welcomed by young readers.

I'm thrilled to be one of 16 Novelists Inc. authors included in a new anthology called I Never Thought I'd See You Again. All the stories use the title theme. The cover is a wonderfully evocative picture of a mossy pier stretching into a dark lake. I hope you'll take a look. It's Available now!

What fun! A Japanese manufacturer is planning to create plush bears from the bears in my picture books. I've seen photos of the prototypes and they are adorable!

The bears series has grown by one book with a recent offer from Candlewick for BEARS AND A BIRTHDAY. Recently, Scholastic included BEARS IN BEDS with an audio disk in their Honeybee Book club for the earliest readers.

After years of writing in other fields, I'm having so much fun with stories of the little bears begun as BEARS ON CHAIRS, published by Candlewick Press both as a picture book and as a toddler board book. Recently, the story was read on a popular children's program in Australia called Playschool. TV rights have also sold in Japan.

When BEARS ON CHAIRS was published in Japanese, I was especially delighted since my daughter-in-law Miwa is from Fukuoka and has family there. I was even more excited when BEARS ON CHAIRS was ranked as the 9th best picture book of 2011 in Japan. A sequel, BEARS IN BEDS, was published by Candlewick in August, 2012, with more of artist David Walker's adorable illustrations. The story of the bears reassuring each other after frightening nighttime noises was also published in Japan in 2012.

A third book, BEARS IN A BATH, also illustrated by David Walker is scheduled for release in the U.S. in 2014 and in Japan in late 2013. It will be such fun to see my grubby little bears resisting bath time, then learning to love it. I can't wait to share all the books with preschool and primary school classes.

I'm thrilled by a brand new offer from Candlewick for a middle-grade novel currently titled SHIP OF DOLLS. It's been years since I've written for this age and while I will never grow tired of picture books, it's fun to expand with a longer story.

With a 6 and 9 year old in the house, we have a LOT of children's books. This "Bears" series is by far our most favorite! We LOVED, LOVED, LOVED "Bears on Chairs" and were ecstatic when we heard "Bears in Beds" was coming out!!! Our girls loved it right off the bat and it has a new cherished spot, right next to the loved-to-tatters "Bears on Chairs".

Bears in Beds is a treat for story time or bedtime! These bears are so incredibly cute, you are sure to hear a chorus of "Awww" when kids get a look at this group of five bears and their little lineup of five beds. Big Brown Bear is the first in bed, followed by Yellow Bear, Fuzzy Bear, and those two little scamps, Calico and Floppy Bear. The picture of Big Brown Bear untangling Calico and Floppy is especially dear and the sight of all five bears snug in their beds is sure to bring sleepy thoughts to any young toddler's mind.

The second half of this book introduces some anxiety as the bears hear a noise in the night. The author seamlessly introduces some fun sound effects into the text that makes this second half especially engaging for preschool audiences. Parents and kids alike will appreciate the ending, which features all five bears in the same bed as Big Brown Bear reads to them a story about "a pesky girl with golden hair".

The read aloud flow is spot on, with nary a forced rhyme in the bunch! This book is a pleasure to read and a visual treat, with its soft pastel colors perfectly evoking soft thoughts of bedtime and beloved teddies. This is an excellent choice for bedtime themed story times and any toddler or preschooler's personal bedtime collection.
