My four year old and I really enjoy all of the bear story adventure books. This one was about a little guy that was too shy or scared to come out and meet his new friends. Bear and his forest friends helped to coax their soon to be new friend out and once they did, everyone enjoyed themseleves. Great conversation starter especially with school just beginning! This is a strong and durable board book with lots of colorful pictures for little siblings to follow along with. Recommended for the toddler, Preschool, and Kindergarten age groups.

Bear Is Back,

This review is from: Bear's New Friend (Paperback)
BEAR'S NEW FRIEND, by Karma Wilson, is a cute, simple story about making new friends. My wee one and I love our first introduction to Bear in BEAR STAYS UP FOR CHRISTMAS, and we could wait to read another Bear book.
In BEAR'S NEW FRIEND, Bear is in the mood to play, and so he goes off in search of his friends. But in the woods he catches sounds and glimpses of an unknown animal. Could it be a new friend? Told in rhythmical, rhyming verse, almost (but not quiet) reminiscent of Dr. Seuss, BEAR'S NEW FRIEND is charming story that will appeals to younger children and those learning to read alike. The rhyming words and large print make BEAR'S NEW FRIEND an easy choice for beginning readers. Jane Chapman's illustrations are pretty, colorful, detailed, adorable, and fun. They bring the words to life, and put the child into the heart of the story. BEAR'S NEW FRIEND is not quite up to the standard of BEAR STAYS UP FOR CHRISTMAS, but it is still an entertaining story, especially for fans of the Bear. My daughter is really enjoying this story, and gets a real kick out of sounding out all the words herself. BEAR'S NEW FRIEND is RECOMMENDED.

very nice longer-format story in board book form,

This very sweet story is longer than most board books, with 21 pages of text. Plot is simple-- Bear and other kind forest animals find and welcome a shy new forest friend (an owl). The story is delivered through charming rhyme and very special, emotionally rich illustrations.
Jane Chapman has a real genius for creating warm, expressive, and friendly illustrations for children. Strongly recommended for toddlers.

My 2-year-old really enjoys this sweet little book, about Bear and his various friends (Mouse, Hare, etc.) who meet a new, shy little critter. It's a nice, sturdy board book, and it's just the right length -- not over in 2 seconds, but short enough to keep a toddler's attention.
In addition, the illustrations are darling! My son really likes learning the names of new kinds of animals, and the realistic-but-kid-friendly drawings are great for that.

Hooray, a new Bear board book!,

Finally! My 3 year old son has been waiting for a new Bear book from Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman, but I was reluctant to buy the more expensive (and easier to destroy) hardcover version of Bear's New Friend. Now the book is available as a board book, and my son (OK, me too) couldn't be happier.
In Bear's New Friend, Bear and company (that's Mouse, Hare, Badger, Gopher, Mole, Raven and Wren for those of you who haven't read these books hundreds of times) are trying to find out who the newcomer to their forest is. They catch a glimpse and hear a sound, but the stranger is very shy, finally responding to the gang's entreaties to go and have some fun at the "ol swimmin' hole" (which I assume is different from the "ol fishin' hole" in Bear Wants More). Wilson tells a charming tale of turning newcomers into friends, and does it with all the charm I've come to expect. The rhyming scheme in Bear's New Friend is similar to the earlier Bear books, but doesn't flow quite as smoothly. Jane Chapman, as always, delivers absolutely lush and gorgeous pages. Her characters are so well rendered that you feel like you can reach in and pet them, and there's almost as much going on in her lively, detailed backgrounds. If your child/children are fans of Bear Snores On and Bear Wants More, you'll want to introduce them to Wilson and Chapman's latest installment right away, especially now that it's available in a sturdy (and less expensive) board book format.

The Bear books make for a fine, fun reading experience with your pre-schooler. The illustrations are fun and engaging. The author does an exceptional job creating characters and stories to which my child can easily relate. On another strong note, this book is VERY sturdy (I've noticed a real deterioration in "board" books of late, with poor bindings) and was pleased that my child could handle without fear. We've not read the other books in this series, but this one was certainly enjoyable.

Bears New Friend is a sturdy board book by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman. A popular storybook character already, this Bear title should entertain your young listener/readers. It is written in simple rhyming patterns and illustrated well with adorable pictures! The main premise of the story deals with making friends and follows Bear as he tries to find out who he heard make a 'clatter' in the forest. Along the way, we meet all of Bears friends, and in the end, we watch Bear make a new friend.
This charming, sturdy board book is sure to keep your child guessing, making it a good read for your young readers!

Such a cute book...,

This book is adorable! My sons and I have all of the bear series and this one is their new favorite. We've almost got it memorized (the rhyming makes that very easy) and have a lot of fun doing voices and actions along with the story. I wasn't AS impressed with the rhyme in this one as compared to her other bear stories, but it is still an awesome book :)
Get it, your kids will thank you.

We bought this for our 5yr old at a Scholastic book fair (much cheaper) and she loves it. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is cute and flows well. This is a great book for beginning readers who've mastered their basic sight words and are ready for something a little more. The rhyming verse and the visual clues, along with the simple sentence structure all provide great clues for figuring out new words. It also makes the book easy to read out loud.
