This review is from: Bears: A Year in the Life (Hardcover)
This is a beautifully written, well done book on North American bears. The photography is astounding, with over 100 colour photographs. I would recommend this book to anyone with any interest in learning about bears, their lives, their habits and behaviours.

Highly recommended,
This review is from: Bears: A Year in the Life (Hardcover)
I am currently photographing bears myself in western Canada and hugely enjoyed this beautiful book. The author mixes wonderful photography with deep, fascinating insights into the behaviour and ecological relationships of North America's three bear species. If you want a book on bears that is both beautiful and intelligent, look no further!

Wildlife at its "Bear-y" Best...,
By
This review is from: Bears: A Year in the Life (Paperback)
As reviewer Bast from Hampton Roads wrote, I "cannot recommend this book (highly)enough..."
For anyone who loves, likes, is fascinated by or has a passing interest in bears or wildlife in general, this book is good and wonderful. A "should not miss" publication. Some of the best, most outstanding, pictures of bears ever collected or compiled for publication. Exceptional. The life of bears, generally and scientifically, is discussed in a most readable, enjoyable manner, both in word and format, a month-by-month look at a bear's life. Hence, the accurate and appropriate subtitle, "A Year in the Life..." The differences and similarities of black bears, brown bears, grizzlies, and polar bears discussed herein are interesting and remarkable. For example, bears do not hibernate because of temperature. Bears hibernate because of a reduced food supply. And polar bears don't hibernate at all. Interesting stuff. The bear, one of God's greatest creations, evolutionary or otherwise, is all here in its radiance, glory and ferocity. Note/question: What is the difference between a brown bear and a grizzly? This is the one area where the book was not specifically clear, but its overall quality, expertise and presentation more than make up for this one small hanging question.

This review is from: Bears: A Year in the Life (Hardcover)
This book is about the bears of North America - polar bears, and black and brown bears. The book is organized by month. For each month, the life of each bear species is compared. For example, for the month of November hibernation is the main topic under discussion. The author compares the different hibernations of each species of bear and the scientific reason behind those differences. His explanation of hibernation is very interesting and is written so that a non-scientist can understand what the author is writing about.
Each chapter is lavished with excellent photography that illustrate the points being made. One of the photos the author includes is of a hyper-obese female bear at denning time. It is a fantastic photograph that accompanies the text, and it helps illustrate why female bears need to pack on a lot of fat before they hibernate. Bears is a wonderful book.
