Book Description

10 and up5 and up

As a member of the Mohawk Bear Clan, Baron has always been fascinated by bears—their gentle strength and untamed power. But the Bearwalker legend, passed down by his ancestors, tells of a different kind of creature—a terrible mix of human and animal that looks like a bear but is really a bloodthirsty monster. The tale never seemed to be more than a scary story. Until now.

During a class camping trip deep in the Adirondacks, Baron comes face-to-face with an evil being that is all too real. Although he knows how the story ends in the legend, Baron must overcome this Bearwalker on his own terms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Folk Tale Mystery, October 6, 2010

This book from Joseph Bruchac does not depart from his excellent story telling abilities. It is a mystery with horror and terror mixed in. If you like being "on the edge of your seat" while reading, this tale "fits the bill." This modern tale is classified as fiction, but who knows whether or not this tale actually takes its plot from ancient Native American "folk tales?"

4.0 out of 5 stars Bearwalker (YA), May 25, 2011

This review is from: Bearwalker (Kindle Edition)
This was a good YA read, especially for boys interested in adventure and survival books. Baron is heading to a camp in the Adirondacks on a school trip and he is hopeful to see some of the bears he is so interested in and has so many stories from his Mohawk heritage about in his head. He is not expecting to run into con men and psycho killers. But he copes extremely well with the change in plans. This is a decent high interest read from an author local to my area. I enjoyed the mention of places that are not that far from me.
