Book Description

2006
The Beast Bowl is a dramatic adventure story, expressed within a classic football parable. But it's more than that, too. Without being preachy and didactic, it weaves in the story of habitat destruction and species extinction at the hand of humankind, through two central characters. Sammy, a chimpanzee, and Carl, an African bull elephant, best friends and teammates, set out on a perilous journey into the heart of the civilized world to find a human to coach their football team in the annual Beast Bowl game. The game itself, like the wild animals that play in it, is in danger of disappearing because of humanity's unrelenting lust for control of the planet. Sammy, obsessed with keeping the game he loves alive, and Carl, motivated by loyalty to his friend, risk their lives and, more important to them both, their freedom, on their quest. Throughout the story, right up to the dramatic last play of the climactic game, values of teamwork, diligence, loyalty, respect and justice stand in contrast to selfishness, dishonesty, bigotry and hatred.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic novel written for all ages, October 6, 2006
This review is from: The Beast Bowl (Paperback)
The Beast Bowl is a fantastic novel written for all ages, but with the especial intent of reaching out to teenagers and raising their environmental awareness. The Beast Bowl is about a football game, but not just any game - a game so great and ancient its players are animals from around the world, who risk everything for a chance at the competition. A handful of black-and-white drawings illustrate this high adventure with underlying themes about the importance of cooperation and teamwork, as well as caution against environmental habitat destruction and species extinction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beast Bowl Review, June 13, 2006
This review is from: The Beast Bowl (Paperback)
The Beast Bowl is a wonderfully written descriptive tale of two friends' efforts to survive in the wild and domesticated worlds as they journey across continents on a personal quest. The animal characters are developed in an Aesopian way, as we see relationships develop and suffer, grow intellectually from their experiences and perhaps even educate the human populace about their plight. One can not help to understand the overriding theme throughout the book, that animals too possess intellect and emotion, that man is part of the animal world and that without a world-wide shift in our attitude & treatment of these magnificent creatures, their way of life and ours will be irrevocably changed for the worse.

Mr. Chaikin proves to be an efficient and talented writer. The story and plot are richly constructed, which make for an enjoyable read. The concept is so fresh and exciting that it appeals to both animal lovers and sports fans alike. Of course, there also exist many classic good versus evil conflicts. The book teaches us to be aware of our surroundings and appreciate what is important to us.

I personally would recommend this book to my children, my parents and everyone in between.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guys will love it, June 4, 2006
This review is from: The Beast Bowl (Paperback)
The Beast Bowl is an action-adventure novel that sports fans of all ages will enjoy. It's a great gift, especially for the guy who isn't interested in all those "young adult" books written by women and for girls. And you know what? Adults will love this book, too.

The Beast Bowl is a wholesome adventure wrapped around a vivid football story that, without being didactic, embodies positive values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect for the environment. At the same time, it's a great read. Tom Chaikin has a master's ear for dialog and a wicked, sly sense of humor to break the dramatic tension at just the right times.
