The Elegy of the Beast,
By
This review is from: Beast (Paperback)
This is an elegant, sophisticated graphic-novel, & one that requires a little interpretation on the reader's part.Colette, a young sculptor, is called out to a lush mansion to carve out a portrait in marble. But when her strange, enigmatic client finally reveals himself to her, she can't help but be terrified by his dark, ghostly appearance. Yet soon Colette finds herself mesmerized by the gentle 'Beast,' in his kindness, loneliness, & honest storytelling. But there's a deeper mystery lingering in the air. I can't help but be reminded---just a little---of 'The Beauty & the Beast.' Though the paths of these two tales are quite different, certain characterizations & pathos softly parallel one another. There is a haunting poetry in these pages. The simplest of interactions---a kind word, a touch---take on more profound meaning. One must connect the dots & use a bit of imagination in the end to reach its full conclusion. The art, in wispy, dreamy line-work, is graceful & full of genuine emotion, perfectly accenting this somber story. Recommended to those looking for something more gentle, graceful, & thoughtful than the average fare.
