I have all of Hassel's books and love 'em all,re-reading them every year or two.Where Hassel's war experiences end and fiction begins,can not be discerned,but the books ring true and if it's not all true-as far as I know Hassel never claimed to be a historian and his books make for an excellent read.The soft porn he sometimes throws in(completely justified in context)doesn't hurt either and would be what one would expect from hard-living soldiers with death as their constant companion.

I thought I had all of Hassel's books until I saw THE BEAST REGIMENT on Amazon.I ordered it immediately-on receiving it I saw that the book had also been released as MONTE CASSINO-so all you Sven Hassel fans please take note!But,undismayed,I started reading and enjoying the book yet again.If you like your war stories nasty and mean,yet sometimes poignant and moving with the odd dash of comic relief chucked in,Hassel's books are for you.

The only thing I dislike about this book is that some of my favorite characters die.Along with LEGION OF THE DAMNED and LIQUIDATE PARIS,I regard this as the closest to autobiographical work by Hassel.

I would recommend anyone considering reading Hassel to start with SS GENERAL(as I did)-if you like SS GENERAL you'll love the rest.

I have been searching for years for his books and eventually tried Amazon who found them all.
I now have all his books.Some of these had to be ordered from England as they are not published here.
My father is also engrossed in these books [he is a WW2 vet who was involved in several of the battles mentioned in the books].
One word of warning, The Beast Regiment is also published under the title "Monte Casino"
Kudos once again to Amazon.
