4.0 out of 5 stars Beast Rest Forth Mouth, March 24, 2010
By
This review is from: Beast Rest Forth Mouth (Audio CD)
The atmosphere that is created by this album upon listening (especially with a killer pair of head phones) is out of this world. The minimalistic instrumentation which is overly destored and magnified creates a wall of sound unlike most anything I have ever heard before in my life. Bear In Heaven have reinvented psychedelic pop music with Beast Rest Forth Mouth.

Tracks like 'Deafening Love' and 'Wholehearted Mess' are nothing short of stunning. What Bear In Heaven have managed to do on Beast Rest Forth Mouth is take everything bands like Grizzly Bear have done and nearly perfected it. 'Fake Out' is a prime example of such. Easily the most upbeat track on the album, and almost shoe-gaze. It totally has that feel anyway.

I'm waiting to see exactly where Bear In Heaven go on their next release. They're one of those groups that have the potential to keep getting better and better with each release, as well as to grow as more profound artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it!, January 18, 2010

The influences are noticeable, ample, and thankfully not derivative: the minimalism of early Krautrock; Eno's solo LPs, especially "Another Green World"; the expansiveness and drama of the Flaming Lips' "Soft Bulletin"; Wire's early work. "Dust Cloud" sounds to me like a most clever reworking of The Fall's "I am Curious Oranj," intentional or not. That's when you know you've stumbled on a great album: when it demands analysis and conversation. While pitchforkmedia claimed the record was unique because it is comprised of carefully-constructed pop songs, only delivered in the most unusual ways, I think they've sold BiH short. This is a thoroughly captivating record, and with repeated listening, it does warrant the occasional sing along like any good pop record--and yet as whole this music is deliberately too strange to qualify as pop music. The ambivalence in their sound is what makes it such a terrific, special album. I'm still waiting for everyone to catch up--Bear in Heaven are one of the best bands in America.

5.0 out of 5 stars THERE IS NO OTHER TROY LEFT FOR ME TO BURN...., February 24, 2010
By
This is the best album I have heard in a long time. It beats Wild beasts, Fleet Foxes (maybe too early to say but definitely has the potential) , Band of Horses, Phoenix's last album, Animal Collective and how about if I say Blitzen Trapper. Hmmmm...so you're thinking what else? I don't know if calling this sound indie is doing it justice but not since a song called "snow of 85" and another called "white rabbit" have I heard such a piledriver of a song. I am talking about track 1, which is a song about an adieu. I love how many bands start an album saying goodbye, I don't think it was wonderful old Lifehouse's idea of doing that with Hanging by the moment, but whatever it is, whether it was staind or offspring's Americana, some how the first track does justice to this delightful heartfelt moving collaboration of a record.

A beautiful voice sings, Doomsday it's so quiet
You hardly know it's there
Dollars of triumph
They're loaded down some well

Thunder is expanding
Like your face into the ground
Thunder is expanding
And the rate will wear you down

The best times were better
When you didn't need to think
The eagle or monster
Is pulling down our feet.

Lovesick Teenagers has potential to be the best song which launches this band into a switch. The best album in a long time. Terribly addictive music. For everyone who ever foot-tapped to a jangling guitar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite release in a while., November 21, 2009

Really solid album. "Drug a Wheel" is so defiant. Bear in Heaven perfectly blends the electronic and acoustic elements. Really good vocals/arrangements. Definitely worth the purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely incredible..., August 20, 2010
This review is from: Beast Rest Forth Mouth (Audio CD)
Being a musician and dj, music is essentially my life. That said, I have exceptionally high standards and not a whole lot impresses me anymore. I detest "music" that is pedestrian and lacking in substance or originality, and unfortunately so much music falls into this category. But not Bear in Heaven. This album is by far the best thing I have heard in ages. Their music is completely unique and intriguing. I listen to this record a few times a day and I hear something new with every listen. I am thrilled that there are still people out there capable of making good music, and even more impressive, composing a cohesive, entirely listenable record; a seemingly Herculean task in this day and age. I am anxious to hear where this band goes from this point. The songs on this record are amazing, to say the least. Bear in Heaven's music is atmospheric, dense, moody, original, and to add to the wonder of it all, the lyrics are awesome too. I am so excited about music again thanks to this band.

5.0 out of 5 stars minimalist.... complex... it's got a beat you can dance to...., July 21, 2010

I didn't like this album at 1st. But as is usual with things one doesn't like, they deserve more listening... anyway for me because I assume I must be missing something. I was. Its steady beat and thick electronica mashed together with echo-y vocals and a kind of minimalism in their approach to complex layering grows on you quickly. Just turn it up, lay on the floor and go with the flow.... you'll be transported. Or turn the lights off, light some candles, turn it up (always an important step), get naked and dance around the room with the dog or cat (they get it!). This is good for a personal experience.

Alternatively, invite your buds over, turn it up, and have a party. (getting naked optional)

BTW.... I thought this was their earliest album. It's not. "Red Bloom of the Boom (Dig)" is from 2007! I must admit, I like it better. It's a more complex and varied offering, IMHO. Be sure to check it out!Red Bloom of the Boom (Dig)

5.0 out of 5 stars Drown Away From The Ruble, May 9, 2010
This review is from: Beast Rest Forth Mouth (Audio CD)
Beast Rest Forth Mouth is an excellent listen. Most bands are to engulfed with instrumentation that it clouds their vision. This album not only has a great textural identity but aspires to create a whole entire world out of a minimalist sound. The only contemporary I can think of is The Microphones' "In the Glow Pt. 2" in terms of scope and execution of vision.

5.0 out of 5 stars an odd place you'll want to be..., December 18, 2009
This review is from: Beast Rest Forth Mouth (Audio CD)
Brooklyn band with their 2nd album of captivatingly innovative & immediate synth/guitar pop/rock
that combines prog-rock and experimental psychedelics with superior songcraft in a spacious &
epic manner that approaches, but exceeds, terms like "art rock" and "electronic shoegaze". Try
to imagine an unlikely combination of Can, Grizzly Bear, Built To Spill & My Bloody Valentine.
Shake, re-arrange, assemble & enjoy.
