Format: Paperback
This collection of stories with transforming characters contains my favorite short story from author Lydia Ondrusek, "Help Wanted." In this story, set in Louisiana after the Gulf oil spill, a young woman working to help rescue marine birds caught in the damaging oil is herself rescued from society's attitudes of apathy and defeatism when she meets a simple but quite remarkable young man. Through their work together, more than one wounded bird is healed and released back into the wild. Absolutely lovely and surprising twist at the end. As always, Ondrusek packs a powerful emotional punch in such few words.
