Why we should hesitate before generating offspring:, August 10, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: The Beastly Baby (Hardcover)
The piquant drawings and delicious writing of Edward Gorey never fail to provide pleasure and (guilty?) amusement, particularly at the expense of... children. That he is one of the very few artists in any medium who gets away with this in these stridently familo-centric times is both refreshing and a testament to his genius. --Chris Jense

Wonderful............., October 8, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Beastly Baby (Hardcover)
This is an absolutely wonderful book. It's for everyone out there who secretly hates the screaching child in the back of the theatre/airplane/department store, etc. Face it, some of us were just not meant to reproduce. Gorey (or Weary...) unleashes his wicked sence of humor and acid wit once again in this ode to the unfortunate and interminable. The Amazon link was brought to my attention by a friend who actually gave me this book as a gift several years ago. I can't imagine that she spent more than twenty dollars on it at the time; and now I am pleased to see that an existing copy is worth about two-hundred dollars. Question...what might mine be worth....signed?

Amusing? Appalling., March 28, 2011
This review is from: The Beastly Baby (Hardcover)
While I see this amusing from an adult perspective and I too have my fill of badly behaved "atrocious" children, I think giving this to a child is extremely inappropriate to say the very least. I love black humour but this?
The parents wish to be rid of it and its looks, size and very being are derided. Everyone is hoping it will come to a sticky end as soon as possible.
I am not generally very P.C. but think this sends so many judgmental and unhealthy messages to a child that it is hard to count them.
There is no moral lesson and no real point to this book. It is a picture of narrow minded judgment and borders on - dare one say it - glorifying abusive and neglectful parenthood.
