More from "My Family and Other Animals", January 19, 2011
Also printed as "A Bevy of Beasts". I do hope you have read Gerald "Gerry" Durrell's wonderful semi-autobiographical books about his childhood on Corfu:
"My Family and Other Animals" is a master piece of humor and stories about the fauna of that island. It is followed by "Birds, Beasts, and Relatives", and The "Garden of the Gods" (aka Fauna and Family).
I say SEMI-autobiographical, as although the books are written as if non-fiction, apparently the author has added or changed a few details to make the stories read better or be more humorous. No matter.
In any case, if you have not read them, stop now and find yourself a copy of them, or at least the first. Enjoy. You will thank me.
If you have read them, you likely want to read more about Gerry. This book is about after when Gerry returned to England, and how he pursued his lifelong dream to preserve animals by starting a new type of zoo. Here, he starts work as a assistant zoo-keeper at the famous Whipsnade Zoo.
Still funny, but without his interesting family or his friends- Spiro and Dr Theo.
