Biography

La Grande (pronounced in the way of the American West, without any hint of French inflection – “luh grand”) is a town just east of the Wallowa Valley in northeastern Oregon where native Oregonian Laura Gibson found inspiration while writing the songs that would become her new album of the same name. Gibson describes La Grande as a place that “people usually pass through ... Read more in Amazon's Laura Gibson Store

I was instantly entranced by Laura Gibson's voice and style from first hearing some of her songs at the Paste Magazine site. Her creaking and beautiful voice and unusual sparse and often syncopated compositions defy comparisons to others. Listen to the clips... they'll give you a good sense of whether this is for you or not. I'm definitely hooked.

A few more notes: I'm a little confused by the version of Sweet Deception on this disc, which has some cacophonous crud for the last 30 seconds. I like the version on the Podington Bear Remixes Vol. 1 disc better. (I haven't yet figured out how "Laura Gibson" and "Podington Bear" are connected, beyond the Portland music scene, but you can find a download for that disc online of you look for it.)

Beautiful album. Just for the song 'Spirited' this is worthwhile. But the whole thing is great: her delicate voice, the songs, the music..

I did not like this album as I'm not really partial to slow songs. Most of the songs on this album sounded identical. I tried to give it a chance but to no avail and put some mileage on the next song button of the car sterio. . In some ways she doesn't sing as much as speak the songs though she has a nice voice. I don't recommend this album.
