Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Think you can name that pop tune in a few opening bars? Then Beat the Intro is the game for you. The wildly addictive game contains more than 3,000 song clips, grouped into decades: '50s-'60s, '70s, '80s, and '90s-'00s. The gist: a screen comes up with three possible artist/song title names and the intro to the song begins playing; use your DVD remote to choose your answer (some may prefer the faster gameplay of the computer, using your mouse). If you choose wrong, you lose; if you get each answer in a set right, you win, but are still evaluated by how quick you are. The mix of artists is impressive (from the '50s, you might hear Elvis, Doris Day, Buddy Holly or Jimmy Dorsey, for instance), and the game can be played solo or with up to four players. For the best challenge, choose "Random," to mix decades up, and it will soon be clear whose brain is littered with the most useful pop-culture flotsam and jetsam. (It can be a mixed blessing, however, to win a round, only to realize it was because you really did know the difference between Mac Davis' "Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me" and Bread's "Baby I'm-a Want You.") And don't think because you think you remember, say, the early '90s, that you'll have total recall of all the Country Hat Acts. Beat the Intro is great for families, parties, and know-it-all pals, challenging, but broad enough to let everyone test his or her knowledge. OK, strike up the band! --A.T. Hurley

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun But Game Play Is Too Quick, September 28, 2006
Beat The Intro is a fun DVD music trivia game that arrives in stores this October 24th. The single disc game includes over 3,000 questions. The questions are based on song openings, lyrics and pictures from songs and bands of the last 50 years.

The game play is fairly easy, you really don't even need to read the instructions unless you want to. It is a game that you will need your DVD remote to play. I found it much easier to play this game with my computer and a wireless external mouse. Pointing the DVD remote at the TV so much became a drag but playing the game with the mouse on the computer was a blast.

There are two main formats, a quick draw segment and a head to head format for multi-players. In the quick draw segment, you are given the opportunity to answer six questions from the decade of your choice or random. If you get one question wrong you lose--just that simple.

In the head to head format, you choose the number of players. Then you choose the decade. I believe the decades are 50s/60s, 70's, 80's and 90's/00s. I particularly played the 80s decade. In the head to head, after choosing the decade you are given a intro question about a musical artist. After choosing the correct intro, you are given various trivia questions about the artist. The winner of the head to head is whoever scores the most points.

The artists included in the game are fairly well known. I only played the 80s and the 90s/00's decades. Artists that came up in 15 minutes of game play included ABC, Katrina and the Waves, The Cars, Soft Cell, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, A-Ha, Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, Sheena Easton, The Clash, Madonna, and John Mayer to name a few.

The downside is I don't know if this is a fact that will be argued, it seems like several of the intros were re-recorded and sound slightly different than the original songs. I am fairly familiar with the Beyonce song "My Myself, and I," and the A-Ha song "Take On Me," and they sounded slightly different to me, it could have just been me.

It's a fun game. Game play is too quick though. There is no way to lengthen the game play. The quick draw is only six questions and it's over. A head to head game with two players can last 5-7 minutes or less.

It's a fun game though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great For Music Enthusiasts, February 27, 2008

(REAL NAME)
This is a fun game that works on DVD players as well as the TV. The instructions are simple and brief and the game moves quickly. I used it with two players, but one player can use it to play too. The questions range from music in the 50's to present day. After about two dozen games some of the questions repeat, and the music is not by the original artists. That is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. You must be into music and know some trivia to enjoy the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent music trivia game, October 20, 2009
I got this game a couple of years back and fell in love with it. Most of the song intros sound like the actual hit versions, to me anyway. You must be quick, the faster you lock in your answer, the better your score will be. I play this game on my PS2 using those controllers to lock in my answers. The game is quick, maybe too quick for some. But you can always start another game when you finish.

I like the fact that it features multiple decades and a solo option. I keep trying to better my time. A great game for those fans of rock and pop music.
