Book Description

July 1994
Ellie Bernstein loves eating and watching M*A*S*H reruns, but when people who look like characters in the series start dying, she suspects a serial killer and realizes that, after her weight loss, she looks too much like Hot Lips.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When Ellie Bernstein of Colorado Springs was 55 pounds overweight and unhappily married to a chronic philanderer, she got through the tough times with the help of cheesecake and fantasies of murder mysteries. Now that she has shed both weight and husband, Ellie is solving real-life murder cases like this one, her second after Throw Darts at a Cheesecake . A devoted M*A*S*H fan, Ellie gets caught up in a series of murders of other local M*A*S*H aficionados who resemble characters on the long-running TV show. Like the popular TV series, this mystery features zany characters, zippy one-liners and such bizarre comic set pieces as Ellie's sharpshooting with a champagne-bottle cork. Missing, however, are required ingredients for a coherent and engrossing narrative, including credible motivation for Ellie's secret involvement in the case when her boyfriend, CSPD Lieutenant Peter Miller, seems to be doing a fine job investigating. Though often clever and amusing, this farfetched premise and caricatured cast yield mostly mish-M*A*S*H.

From Library Journal

Series protagonist Ellie Bernstein (Throw Darts at a Cheesecake, Walker, 1992), an avid M.A.S.H. rerun fan and a group leader for Weight Winners, learns from friendly ex-husband Tony of the suspicious suicide of a man named Frank Burns, who also looks like his television namesake. Then, homicide detective Pete Miller, her current lover and sidekick, informs her of other murders involving M.A.S.H. look-alikes: too bad Ellie herself resembles Hot Lips! Anyway, Ellie, looking for a serial murderer and digging for trouble, makes new friends in a M.A.S.H. club. Silly premise, flippant tone, and shallow characterization weaken this mystery.

More About the Author

When Denise [Deni] Dietz was in the third grade, she wrote her first story, THE PENCIL WHO GREW UP TO BE A STUB. Although the assignment was to write a one-page story, using an ink pen, Deni wrote a five-page story, first-person...and she used a pencil (the narrator of her story). Whereupon, she received a failing grade for not following orders. Just like her series heroine, diet guru Ellie Bernstein, Deni doesn't follow orders unless they make sense.

Years later, after Deni had enjoyed a short-lived singing career and acting career, she sat at her typewriter, flexed her fingers, and pounded out her first culinary mystery: THROW DARTS AT A CHEESECAKE, inspired by her part-time job as a Weight Watchers lecturer. In "Cheesecake," diet club members are getting killed off at goal weight and eating as if their very lives depended on it. The second book in the series, BEAT UP A COOKIE, revolves around a group of M*A*S*H* addicts and is dedicated to Alan Alda.

Switching to a computer, Deni hit the bestseller list with FOOTPRINTS IN THE BUTTER - an Ingrid Beaumont Mystery co-starring Hitchcock the Dog. She followed that success with her stand-alone, FIFTY CENTS FOR YOUR SOUL, her "reluctant witch mystery," EYE OF NEWT, and the 3rd and 4th books in her diet club mystery series, CHAIN A LAMB CHOP TO THE BED and STRANGLE A LOAF OF ITALIAN BREAD. "Strangle" was nominated for a Left Coast Crime "Lefty" Award as the most humorous mystery of 2009.

Cloning herself into historical romance author Mary Ellen Dennis, Deni wrote THE LANDLORD'S BLACK EYED DAUGHTER. Mary Ellen's STARS OF FIRE will be out December, 2010.

Married to Aussie/Canadian author, Gordon Aalborg (AKA Victoria Gordon), whom she met on-line through a writers loop, Deni, with Gordon, collaborated on a romantic suspense, FINDING BESS, and moved to Vancouver Island, where they are owned by a chocolate Lab named Magic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sure to keep your hands out of the cookie jar!, June 26, 2001

This review is from: Beat Up a Cookie: An Ellie Bernstein/Lt. Peter Miller Mystery (Hardcover)
Having already read Throw Darts at a Cheesecake, I was eager to read another mystery mixing dieters and death - an an intriquing combination, to say the least. And....okay, I admit it, I'm a Weight Watchers member and,to put it bluntly, I was also looking for something to keep my mind off food. And guess what? This book worked - I lost 5 pounds in the time it took to finish the book, less than a week. Every time I wanted a doughnut or a chocolate eclair, I read another chapter. Having said that, I should add that you'll love this book even if you haven't counted a single calorie in your life. It is fun trying to find out who is killing the Great Dieters of America -and why. Now I just have to get my hands on Denise Dietz's other mysteries, so I can keep my eyes on the page - and my hands out of the cookie jar!
