Bill Keith developed his "melodic banjo" style during his time with Bill Monroe in the 1960s. The non-symmetrical style of playing scale oriented passages blended beautifully with Bill Monroe's longtime fiddler Kenny Baker.

By playing note for note on fiddle tunes instead of utilizing the more common rolls of his predecessors, Bill was able to play intricate fiddle tunes note for note on the banjo. Bill Monroe loved the innovation and went into the studio to record with Keith just a few weeks after he joined the band. Both "Devil's Dream" and "Salt Creek" were released on singles. Bill Monroe was going to be the only "Bill" in his band so he introduced Keith as "Brad," his middle name.

In addition to developing this style Bill ihas always been a real innovatorand makes very listenable music. This record is an example of his playing in a Bluegrass setting and features great players like Sam Bush, Mark O'conner David Grier and Kenny Kosek (I love his playing on here). It appears that this album is no longer in print. That's a pity. It's an absolutely delightful album. I love Keith's wonderfully smooth Melodic style, and he's able to morph in enough Scruggs style to keep everyone happy. He's not a 'million notes a second' blaster, but you get the feel that he could if he wanted; meanwhile the musicianship is impeccable and, again, a delightful listen. Will definitely be adding more Bill Keith to my collection.
