The title of Sara B. Wolf's "Beating the Bridge" directly refers to her "beating the bridge" at the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC -- to arriving at a particular bridge early enough in that race to avoid being unceremoniously bussed to the finish line, where no finisher medal awaits. But the subtitle of Wolf's book -- "Make Choices that Empower and Inspire" -- says it all. So this book is not just about marathons. Sara sews a rich quilt of her own stories about such topics as injury recovery, sausages (not what you might first guess), firemen, and even quilts. But running marathons is the dominant topic.
Here are some passages that spoke to me as a marathoner:
(1) "The second marathon comes with blessed memories of sore muscles, aching knees, upset tummies, chafed skin, the post-marathon staggering walk, not being able to step down from the curb or sit down on the toilet, and knowing you have miles to go when every fiber of your being wants you to stop."
(2) "Sometimes it is uncomfortable--there can be aches, tightness, and pain. But that's okay because a little pain lets you know that you are alive. It's more gratifying with pain. Tasks that are difficult to bear are sweet to remember."
(3) "You have to empower yourself. You have to roll with the punches and just move forward, one step at a time. You have to look for the positive in the situation and turn your frown upside down. That's how you get to the finish line--one foot in front of the other."
Marathoners will love this book.
