Essential Information for Gout Sufferers,
This review is from: Beating Gout: A Sufferer's Guide to Living Pain Free (Paperback)
I have been treated for Gout by my Doctor and by a Naturopath for several years, with mixed results. I've eaten cherries, taken Alopurinol, eliminated beer and reduced alcohol, cut back on meat, and tried numerous other remedies. I could expect a painful attack about once or twice a month regardless of all my efforts. This book was the first time I really began to understand the mechanism of Gout in total and how it is treated today. As a result of this book, I have not had an attack in over 5 months and am not making any onerous sacrifices. Rather than giving you one particular cure that will eliminate Gout for everyone, this book enables you to understand your disease and to work with your doctor to develop a solution that will make Gout a minor irritation in your life. Do I recommend it? If you have Gout, you don't need to ask.

I've been suffering from gout for about two years and I'm frustrated that most of the information you find online conflicts each other. Doctor's don't give you much information and I was misdiagnosed several times. I can't take the common drug Allopurinol so I decided the buy the book to gain more information.
The book is a compilation of information gathered from different resources. It's thorough regarding the different treatments and drugs available. What I found most valuable was the food list that listed many foods and their purine contents. ***Update - I commented on how the food lists were valuable. One thing I wanted to point out is that there is little information on diet. As an example, the book explains that beer can raise your uric acid and that it is off limits. When you look at the food list it states that beer has 13 grams of purine. When you look at chicken for instance, it has over 100 grams - does this mean that chicken is deadly? Also, I've always been told to stay away from red meat but then again, ground beef shows much lower purine than chicken. I'm not debating if the info is correct, but how do you use this information? It's impossible to completely eliminate purine from your diet - this book doesn't focus on this.

This review is from: Beating Gout: A Sufferer's Guide to Living Pain Free (Perfect Paperback)
This book is filled with very useful information in fairly simple terms to help put an end the the nightmare that is gout. Even a section of technical jargon that you can take to your doctor to help get your treatment plan adjusted! I recommend this book to anyone with gout.

This is the best book on gout yet. I have read several books on gout and numerous subsections of broader category books and none have the detail of coverage this book has. Great book for anyone who suffers from the desease. Great book for anyone who treats or lives with a gout sufferer. I gave my doctor a copy.

This book covers the causes, short term treatment and long term treatments and attack prevention of gout. A good reference for anyone suffering from this disease. Also contain a table of foods and corresponding purine content. A larger list than you can find on the internet. This is a very good guide for persons confused of what to eat or prepare. Covers regimen needed depending on the type of treatment as well as alternate treatment options. The nice thing about this book is that it covers the "why's". You can get bits and pieces of information from your doctor and from the internet, but this book is a more comprehensive report. Most importantly, this book works well for me to fight gout. As a disclaimer, always consult your doctor before trying the treatment options.

Great Book,
This review is from: Beating Gout: A Sufferer's Guide to Living Pain Free (Paperback)
I just purchased this book and anyone suffering from Gout should read this book. It's easy to read, it is well written, and it gets right to the point. The underlying diseases related to gout go unknown to most lay people and even to most doctors. This is a MUST read. I highly recommend this book. The author seems to have taken painstaking research to deliver a factual, scientific based book. Good stuff.
