Book Description

March 2, 2010
This is the story of my 64 years with diabetes. It gives my diabetes history and some of my autobiography. Online friends have wanted to know what it was like to be a diabetic in the 1940's and beyond. This will be explored here and carried to the present day. Many topics are discussed, including causes of Type 1 diabetes, how some Type 1 diabetics have lived so long without complications, the Joslin Medalist Program and my participation in the Joslin Medalist Study. There are many pictures dating as far back as the 1930's. My online blogs of my past have been very popular. Hundreds of replies say I have given inspiration and hope for the future of many of my diabetic readers and their families. My hope is that I can do the same for those of you who read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspirational story straight from the heart April 6, 2010
Format:Paperback
As a type 1 diabetic, I was greatly inspired by the author's story and read the entire book the day I got it. The author chronicles his childhoood, young adulthood, and adult life with type 1 diabetes, just a few decades after insulin was discovered and before diabetes was really understood (in the beginning years, there was no such thing as a glucose meter or carbohydrate counting for many years, he had to boil his syringes to sterilize them!) Yet, the author has lived into his senior years, for over 60 years with type 1 diabetes, and has come out of it without any serious complications. In the calming, honest way that he weaves his story, and as his life story reveals itself, the author proves that it is never too late to take charge of your body and your diabetes management and to live a long, healthy life with diabetes -- a message that truly spoke to me as a type 1 diabetic and that is bound to inspire other disheartened and discouraged diabetics.

But you don't have to have diabetes to enjoy this book, written straight from the author's heart. In fact, I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the early years of diabetes management techniques and to those trying to get a better understanding of what it is like to live with this condition. Most of all, I recommend it to those who are struggling to find motivation, information, and inspiration -- this man is a calming force and living proof that life with good diabetes control is possible.

Richard Vaughn has survived 64 years with Type 1 diabetes---something which may not seem so remarkable to those who have only known of diabetes in the late 20th/early 21st centuries. Beyond his own interesting revelation of his life and how it was shaped and challenged by diabetes, it was FASCINATING to hear first hand how primitive the tools were for ascertaining the amount of excess sugars, the crudeness of the tools, the complete lack of awareness of the disease, even among phsicians putting themselves forward as experts.

Richard has made a huge, personal contribution to our understanding of how far we've come in managing diabetes. His health today, his positive outlook, his ability to adapt to new strategies should give us all great hope for more and better solutions---and look toward the cure we all know is possible!

5.0 out of 5 stars wisdom March 17, 2010
Format:Paperback
I have been looking forward to this book for many months. I'm so glad Richard finally had the chance to publish his autobiography. His wisdom will be of much help to many diabetics all over the world. Not that many people can say they have had diabetes type 1 for 64 years, without having any complications. I'm impressed Richard. Thank you for putting so much effort in helping your colleague-diabetics.

Love from Belgium..
