5.0 out of 5 stars "THE BEATLES ARE COMING" REALLY ROCKS!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Ponderous!
I borrowed this voluminous, joyless dead whale of a book from a colleague and am very glad not to have spent the 50 bucks it would have required me to lug it home from a book store. Spizer is a lawyer and while he may be an effective advocate in his briefs, a briefer account of the time in question would have been most welcome. For the die-hard Beatlemaniac perhaps, but...

5.0 out of 5 stars "THE BEATLES ARE COMING" REALLY ROCKS!!!, December 8, 2003
With his previous books on The Beatles' Vee-Jay, Capitol and Apple recordings, Bruce Spizer earned a well-deserved reputation as America's leading Beatles author, archivist and researcher. He has now further sealed this reputation with what will certainly be THE definitive story of The Beatles' arrival on the American scene...and into our collective consciousness...in 1963-64. "The Beatles Are Coming: The Birth of Beatlemania in America" traces the group's dramatic rise in the States in exacting detail. Theirs was certainly not an overnight success in America and Spizer goes to great lengths to explain why that road to success was not always a smooth one. He also takes on all the myths perpetuated in other books and blows them apart, revealing the truth behind the inaccuracies we've long come to accept as fact. The story is beautifully-woven in chronological order from February 1963 through the end of The Beatles' first U.S. visit in February 1964. Intermixed with Spizer's lively and informative text are over 450 images, most in full-color and including many previously unpublished photos and documents...all vividly reproduced to bring this amazing story to life. At the heart of the book is Spizer's research. His fact-finding skills are unsurpassed. He tracks down and interviews most of the key players from those early days in America, including broadcasting icon Walter Cronkite (who has written the foreword). Expect more accolades for this book as the word spreads! And the word is "Spizer". I give this astonishing new book a solid FIVE STARS! It's an essential reader, written to satisfy both the Beatles scholar and the casual fan. Whatever you do, save some space on your Beatles bookshelf for this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars BRUCE SPIZER HAS DONE IT AGAIN......., December 6, 2003
By
PERRY D COX (Scottsdale, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
Well, Mr. Spizer has officially released his eagerly anticipated new book which beautifully and masterfully details the Beatles first historic arrival in the U.S. back in early 1964. This time out, Bruce provides the reader with an in-depth view of exactly what those exciting and hectic days were like for the Fabs and the entire country. Of course, as is Bruce's signature style, we get a thoroughly comprehensive look back at those few exciting days and the reader will immediately get swept back in time to get a real feel for the phenomenon that truly was the first wave of Beatlemania in America. As a fan of both the Beatles and Bruce's work, I, and many others are quite literally getting spoiled to the quality and detail all of Bruce's many great books. This offering is certainly no exception as it is full of great facts, details and photos from the magic early 'Beatle Days'! Many of the items and photos featured in the book have never been published before!
So rather than repeat myself with the many superlatives this book so surely deserves, I will ask that the reader simply trust me when I say "This book will definitely be one of your all time favorites"! From Walter Cronkite's insightful foreward to the Beatles' plane leaving the last runway of the U.S., this amazing offering is simply a must have book for all. I know you will enjoy it as I have. I give it the full five stars with frosting!

The high quality of Bruce Spizer's books certainly doesn't end here. If you have previously purchased any of his other volumes, you also need this one! If you haven't bought any of them, what are you waiting for?

Bruce has two other books in the works-"The Beatles Solo on Apple Records" (2004) and "The Beatles Swan Song" (detailing the other record labels the Beatles appeard on in the US) (2005). I can't wait!

This review is from: The Beatles Are Coming: The Birth of Beatlemania in America (Hardcover)
At long last we finally have the true details behind that first visit by four people who changed the world. There have been so many urban legends over the years about the Beatles arrival in the US and the days that followed that trying to get to the facts was next to impossible. Mr. Spizer has once again unleashed his considerable talents at cutting through the morass of myth and mayhem to get to the ultimate truth. Many of the long held misconceptions of what went down all those years ago are put to rest, and many a hidden nugget of treasure is brought to light. If you want to relive those days in the light of an accurate account, or are just curious about what all of the hubbub was about, this is the book for you.

Bruce Spizer is a lawyer. Why? I don't know. This man should be spending all of his time writing Beatle books. This accounting of the birth of Beatlemania in America is extremely entertaining and insightful. The battle between Capitol and VJ records is revealed and quite funny. In the 60's I used to wait for each new Beatle record to be released. Now I wait for new Bruce Spizer books. Well done again...

5.0 out of 5 stars Now you know the Beatles, December 12, 2007
This review is from: The Beatles Are Coming: The Birth of Beatlemania in America (Hardcover)
Nobody likes a know it all unless it is someone like Bruce Spizer who not only knows all about the Beatles but has the gift of presenting this information with great text and incredible graphics. These are things we would never see if it wasn't for his painstaking attention to detail and veracity in collecting rarities of the Fab Four. Once you have experienced one of them then Bruce's many other books about the Beatles become the next thing to collect . I like that he has no agenda other than sharing his commitment to detail in the classiest of manners through these incredible books. On your coffee table or with your coffee - you can't miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relive the Beatlemaniac Experience, March 26, 2004
Bruce Spizer's book about the development and swell of Beatlemania takes the reader through a day-by-day journey of exactly what was that phenomenon known as Beatlemania, adding genuine details and busting a few myths in the process. The book is loaded with photographs, and the author interviews people who were involved in the perpetuation of American Beatlemania. The modern reader will see how astonishing the whole experience was -- even to those who lived it! If you're one of the ones who seeks to find out "what all the fuss was about," you'll want to buy and save this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Account, February 12, 2004

This review is from: The Beatles Are Coming: The Birth of Beatlemania in America (Hardcover)
As a member of the generation first turned onto The Beatles 40 years ago, this is the definitive account of the year-long process that went into breaking The Beatles in America, with a good deal of material not generally known. Spizer documents the story with great detail but in an entertaining way. Even better, the book is visually dazzling, with rare pictures, documents, label reproductions, etc. And it's not just an egghead book for Beatles scholars. Anyone who's interested in The Beatles' historic conquest of America will find something to like about this book. As we said back then, it's fab!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and informative!, January 20, 2004

This review is from: The Beatles Are Coming: The Birth of Beatlemania in America (Hardcover)
I like the Beatles, but I wouldn't describe myself as a Beatles fan. My wife owns all Bruce Spizer's books and I picked this one up to browse through it. I was hooked - it's fun and the momentum carried me through the information dumps so it wasn't until well afterwards that I thought "Hey - why do I *care* how many takes they did on that track?"

This is a great resource for the true fan and an entertaining read for everyone else. It works as a story about the Beatles, about music, and as a fascinating case story in marketing. I thoroughly recommend this book.
