The Kings' Singers do Beatles songs for six-voices,
By Lawrance M. Bernabo (The Zenith City, Duluth, Minnesota) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (COMMUNITY FORUM 04) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Beatles Connection (Audio CD)
You should know who the Beatles are, so it is the King's Singers that need the introduction. They are a six-man vocal ensemble who were originally members of the Choral Scholars at King's College in Cambridge, England who have been performing since 1965 pretty much anything that could be sung in five voices. Here they take on nineteen Lennon & McCartney songs from the Beatles in fine acappella style on this 1988 album. The songs that stand out for me are the ones that the Beatles did not originally record with vocal harmonies, such as "Mother's Nature Son," their lovely version of "Eleanor Rigby," and "I'll Follow the Sun." Sometimes they start off with one voice singing lead and the rest doing vocal backgrounds, such as on "I Love You" and "Blackbird," but then they get around to wonderfully six-part harmonies at the end. Songs like "Help!" will remind you of Bobby McFerrin's work, which is probably the closest most people have come to hearing what the King's Singers do here. Not everything will ring true with you; for example, the high tenor on "Yesterday" does not work for, but one of the ironies of this album is that any time one voice is singled out the effect is less than when they are blending voices in all sorts of interesting ways. But slowing down "A Hard Day's Night" works well and you have to smile when they start off "Back in the U.S.S.R." with a bit of "Georgia on My Mind" (unless you know nothing about geography). "Honey Pie" has a touch of camp, "Can't Buy My Love" is down in perfect Renaissance choral style, and "Michelle" sounds like a Gregorian chant (at least, what I think a Gregorian chant sounds like). You are either going to buy into these songs from start to finish or your are just going to skip the whole thing. But if you are a Beatles fan who always has trouble figuring out which vocal line to follow when singing "If I Fell," then having six voices to choose from should be even more fun. There is enough variety of approach here to keep the fun going for the entire album. For the King's Singers trying more pop-rock hits check out their "Good Vibrations" albums, which features several nice Simon & Garfunkle covers.

The Most Beautiful Beatles!,
By Tomonori Kushimitsu (Kumamoto City, Japan) - See all my reviews

It was almost a decade since I heard this CD. I got so impressed to hear this!"Lady Madonna", "Black Bird", "Back in the USSR", and other great Lennon=McCartney's 19 numbers are reborn. The King's singers give them new power. They are totally corpolated and harmonious. This could be my greatest CD ever!

Insult to the Beatles,
This review is from: Beatles' Collection (MP3 Download)
I love the Beatles. Imagine the shock and horror I experienced Christmas morning 2009 when my wife's parents "blessed" out family with this CD. At first I thought it was a new Beatles "best of" collection. My wife opened it, and began to play it on our stereo. Just about 30 seconds into the first song I turned green, and felt ill.
It takes a special kind of person to enjoy this CD. As for me, NO THANKS!
