Editorial Reviews

This program records the most important celebration ever of the early days of the Beatles in this city and the musical environment that helped to form them. Presented by Liverpool D.J. Spencer Leigh, it visits the places in Hamburg that are particularly associated with the Beatles' time there as well as interviewing veterans from that scene.

Spencer Leigh takes us on a guided tour of Hamburg's Beatles related sites. We are shown the Museum of Hamburg History's "Hamburg Sound" exhibit, led to the nightclubs where the Beatles performed (Indra, Top Ten, Kaiserkeller, & Star-Club), and speak with collectors and performers about The Beatles and the "Hamburg Sound." This DVD runs about two and a half hours long and at the slow pace one might expect from a guided tour. If your are a big fan of the very early Beatles or the Mersey Sound you may enjoy this informative disc. The Beatles may be the main attraction that leads people to Hamburg but after viewing the DVD one gets the feeling that they were just one of many formidable groups on the Hamburg scene. Missing from the DVD are actual samples of Hamburg inspired music which is unfortunate. But if you've ever wanted to visit the birthplace of the Beatles/Mersey sound this DVD is a good place to start. Listening to Kingsize Taylor is a real treat. There is also a Hamburg DVD put out by Mastersound which is equally as good.

This is one of a series of DVD’s presented by Radio Merseyside and author Spencer Leigh, in which he visits various Beatles sites and discusses them. He has done similar shows about Liverpool and Merseyside and I really enjoyed those; however, this is a much weaker programme. Filmed in 2006, it highlights the exhibition The Hamburg Sound (this did eventually become a museum, but it closed in 2012). Although Hamburg was essential to the Beatles, much of the important sites – such as the Top Ten Club, Star Club and the Kaiserkeller – retain little of their original exteriors. Much of the video consists of Spencer Leigh and guide saying things such as, “ah, here is the site of the Bambi Kino cinema where the Beatles stayed, but it is now closed,” and you find yourself looking at the boarded door of a derelict building, which could, frankly, be anywhere. Other places, where the Beatles played or socialised, seemed to be closed. You would have imagined that permission might have been sought to film inside, but this was obviously filmed on a tight budget...

During the video, Spencer Leigh interviews people linked to that time in Hamburg, such as Kingsize Taylor and Gibson Kemp, who also played with Kingsize Taylor and the Dominoes. Both lived in Hamburg at the time – had since moved back there - and the interviews are quite odd. Kemp was running a cafe and seemed concerned about getting back to his cooking, leading to a rather hurried and hushed interview. Kingsize Taylor was very strange – making bizarre allegations. One, often repeated by members of Merseybeat bands at the time, was that the Beatles were considered nothing special. Obviously, this is untrue.
