The First Album I Ever Heard In My Life And Their Most Rocking,
By Dave "Fever Tree" Sigmon (Connecticut, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Beatles' Second Album (Vinyl)
Where "Meet The Beatles!" had more of a British Pop feel, this record is a perfect hybrid of American R&B and British Rock and Roll. The atmosphere is even more workmanlike and the singing and the playing justify its ambitions. The musical complexities are more prominent in their original numbers. They flirt with ska on the anticipatory "I Call Your Name" and there are sudden switches to minor keys in "Thank You Girl" and "I'll Get You". "She Loves You" is so uniquely energy-ridden with chord changes and enormous sound that it almost defies categorization. The lyric even breaks into an adult viewpoint. George's inspired take on Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven" is easily the equal of its author. Paul draws from his Little Richard roots with such vengeance that he owns it. Ringo's drumming is particularly exhilarating on these two cuts. John's Motown covers show him to have an interpretive flair for Smokey Robinson and The Marvelettes. But it's his rendition of "Money" that shreds the original to pieces. He puts so much of his being into this vocal performance that nothing is repressed. When he shouts "I Wanna Be Free", it's exactly the way Rock and Roll should be experienced - raw, intense and getting through to the listener.

What can I say? This is a great album from one of the greatest rock and roll groups of all time. It will only increase in value as time goes on.
