Book Description

October 24, 2000
"The Beatles'Story on Capitol Records, Part Two: The Albums" is the second volume of Bruce Spizer's epic Capitol project. The book opens in 1964 with the release of "Meet The Beatles!" and moves forward through 1967's "Magical Mystery Tour." Here is the real story behind the Capitol LPs, with explanations of why Capitol reconfigured the Beatles albums for the American market. For each album, the book provides session and chart information and pictures of the front and back covers, all label variations, trade advertisements, promotional posters and displays. The book offers the most comprehensive coverage ever on the infamous butcher cover to the "Yesterday And Today" album, which was judged so offensive that it had to be recalled and destroyed. It also provides full details regarding the recording and marketing of "Sgt, Pepper's Lonely Harts Club Band." Also included are chapters on the albums issued by Capitol's Canadian and Mexican subsidiaries and a complete breakdown on the stereo, duophonic and mono mixes used by Capitol. Contains over 600 color and original black & white images.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Bruce’s research and thoroughness is amazing. An entertaining journey through Beatlemania worth savoring over and over again. -- Alan Livingston, President of Capitol Records, 1962-1968

From the Author

Although Capitol was not the first label to issue Beatles records in the United States, the majority of the group's songs appeared in America on the label. Capitol’s albums had unique titles, covers and song configurations. While British albums normally did not include hit singles, Capitol placed hit singles on the albums. From 1964 through 1967, Capitol issued thirteen albums and a double documentary disc.

Compiling this book brought back wonderful memories. In addition to reading numerous trade journals, magazines and newspaper articles from the sixties, I listened to the music in its purist form by playing the records. Playing the early Capitol albums on my vintage 1964 Beatles turntable transported me back in time. The record player hummed and the records sometimes gave off a popping sound from vintage scratches, but this only enhanced the experience. “Meet The Beatles!” was the first album I purchased. I still have that album, complete with my name printed on a record store sticker placed on the back cover.

Although I enjoy listening to the Beatles on CD, it is more of a sonic experience than a journey back in time. There is a certain thrill about holding a colorful 12" x 12" record jacket that no CD can ever hope to duplicate. Those Capitol albums were the records of my childhood that I will always remember. For Americans growing up in the sixties, the Beatles on Capitol were the greatest.

This book is the third book of a trilogy that every Beatle collector should have. Starting with the history of VJ, Bruce has fantastically illustrated the Beatles American history on vinyl. With this third edition, Part 2 of the history at Capitol, The photo's, the adverts, and the history itself make this book worthwile in every way.

This was the second Bruce Spizer book that I had bought and like it's companion "Part 1 - The Singles" it is an amazingly enjoyable book to behold. I've got these US versions in my collection though they are Orange Label 70's variations. It's great to learn about the logic behind their releases and it's equally interesting to listen to a US "Rubber Soul" especially as I was used to the UK/Australian 14 track version all these years... the US Version sounds like a Folk/Rock album ALA the Byrds. The "Butcher Cover" saga is a production almost bigger than "Ben-Hur". Bruce Spizer takes you right into the minds of those involved with that drama. No wonder Alan Livingston was reluctant to take those 20 "Butcher" LP's home... as a first-hand participant he'd had enough of them! The Author's thoroughness is never in question and the quality of his books consistently put many others to shame. The label reproductions are wonderful and helpful if you've bought the original US LP's. To think that now those US LP's are now deleted and replaced by their UK counterparts. A good thing is now the first 8 US LP's ("Meet The Beatles" through to "Rubber Soul" (US version) but not including the "The Beatles Story" 2LP 'documentary') are now available on CD in the 2 volume "Capitol Albums" boxed sets in both Stereo & Mono. (Not sure that there will be a 3rd volume though).
Overall the quality is superb and Mr. Spizer's books sit in the same class as those of Mark Lewisohn's "Complete Beatles Chronicle" & "Abbey Road" books as well as the massive "Beatles Anthology" tome. While each part stands alone quite well you must buy Part 1 to complete the set as they complemment each other really beautifully. I thoroughly recommend these books to any Beatles fan and lovers of Rock Music books.
