Editorial Reviews

Review

Lorena Bathey has woven a charming and sparkling narrative of reconnecting, friendship, love, and compassion. This fun read almost glides past before you know it as the characters are surprised by a long overdue awakening. --Lynnette at Avid Reader Book Reviews

I loved the premise of this book and the idea behind the development. I believe most SAHM and those living in modern cul de sac developments will appreciate the struggles of these women. Some might not agree, but the beige cage is a modern day anthropology study waiting to happen. --Charlie at Good Reads

Without getting into too much detail and ruining the story for everyone I ll just say that without Beatrice the women, and even the men, of Vista Heights would not be as happy with their lives as they are now if she never had moved in! I loved getting to meet the neighbors living in Vista Heights, but what really hooked me and kept me minding turning even after I finished reading was the message behind the book. Finding your inner peace and inner beauty. How can you expect love and respect from others if you don t love and respect yourself? Also, don t be afraid to step outside the box and open yourself up to the possibilities around you. This can mean career opportunities, relationships or something as simple as a new hairstyle. And one last thing; don t give up who you are. You re wants and dreams are yours and yours alone. Of course you want to share and merge your wants and dreams with your other half, but don t ever give up what makes you you and makes you happy. I look around me and see people giving up what the truly want because of what they think is expected of them and that makes me sad. The women of Vista Heights broke out from what they thought was expected of them and ended up being much happier and at peace with their lives. They no longer felt empty, unsatisfied or replaceable and I hope everyone at some point finds that thing in life that makes them feel important. --Amanda, Chick Lit=The New Black Blog

Beatrice Munson really surprised me! I thought I'd enjoy it...I didn't realize how much it would genuinely touch me. This book is so much more than just chick lit. It is truly inspirational. When Marissa's old high school nemesis moves in to the house across the street, Marissa braces herself to relive all of the insecurities that she faced in her teens...however the whirlwind that is Beatrice has quite the opposite effect on, not only Marissa, but the entire neighborhood. Day by day, the women who'd previously been trapped in the stereotypical suburban lifestyle rediscover themselves and begin to actually live for themselves rather than simply keeping up appearances. One by one they rediscover their hopes and dreams and encourage each other to follow them. --Melissaseclecticbookshelf.com

About the Author

Growing up in the Bay Area of Northern California, Lorena Bathey attended St. Marys College in Moraga graduating with a degree in English. Then she traveled, learned about life, and developed great fodder for a book. Losing her mother to cancer and her own marriage s demise brought her to find herself. She wrote Happy Beginnings: How I Became My Own Fairy Godmother and found speaking and empowering others was her passion. Lorena Bathey found after writing her first book that characters were visiting her mind and wouldn't leave. She was introduced to Marissa, Andrea, Lily, Deidre and Beatrice and her first novel, Beatrice Munson, came to life. After finishing that book she was inspired to write more novels and she knew that pursuing her passion was the best way to live her life. So a writer she became.

4.0 out of 5 stars Change is coming and her name is Beatrice Munson! June 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A few days ago I finished reading a novel which contained the most vile characters. The flavour of that book left a taste much like a bitter pill - so much so that I felt it necessary to dive straight into another book to rid me of its bad aftertaste. Cue "Beatrice Munson" by Lorena Bathey.

This is about a group of beige women, who wear beige clothes, live on a beige street, in beige houses, filled with beige furniture. Their beige lives get shaken up, however, when their new confident, colourful, cosmopolitan neighbour, Beatrice Munson, moves across the street. As they open themselves up to her, change takes place. It's "Mary Poppins" meets "Desperate Housewives."

This is a great beach book. Chick lit for the 30-50 somethings of suburbia who want to revisit unfulfilled dreams, dust them off, and make them come true. Entertaining and inspirational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Beautiful! Catch it as soon as you can!! June 21, 2012
Format:Perfect Paperback
When Lorena Bathey was looking for reviewers, for her book "Beatrice Munson", I jumped at the opportunity. Many months ago, as I was cruising around on Goodreads, I came across "Beatrice Munson", and immediately fell in love with the cover! I think the cover is beautiful, and enticing, and is among my favourite book covers. Lorena Bathey generously mailed the book to me, in exchange for an honest review. I could not wait for the book to arrive!! And when the book did arrive, just holding the book in my hand brought a smile to my face. Then I started to read about Beatrice, and all the ladies in the community of San Martino, a suburb of San Francisco.

Lorena Bathey's narrator, Marissa Lyons, is a character, who captured my heart in the very first paragraph, (truly, she did!). I identified with part of her story, of her high school experiences, and her challenge to find her true place in life.

The character of Beatrice Munson moved into a house across the street from Marissa Lyons. Once Beatrice settled into her home, decorated in her own personal style, Marissa came for a visit. The vision of Beatrice's house was described through Marissa's voice. I say vision, because that is the word that came to mind, as I read Lorena Bathey's beautiful description of Beatrice's house. It was a house that I wanted to be in, a living room that I wanted to settle into a chair, with a cup of coffee, and a really good book. Lorena's talent with words drew me into the San Martino community, made me feel welcomed.

The action in this novel moved smoothly and quickly. The only reason I did not finish the book in one sitting, was because family commitments called me away. But I did finish the book in my second sitting - reading into the wee hours of the morning! I could not go to sleep without knowing how everyone's life turned out!

In following the characters' daily lives, the reader sees how each character develops. The enjoyable thing was that Lorena Bathey showed this development through conversation and action, rather than pages of description. The humour in "Beatrice Munson" is at times elegantly displayed, in beautiful phrases that bring the reader further into the world of all the San Martino ladies. Sentences like this:

"....Graydon was like the high dive in the male dating pool, and on the female scale I was about halfway down to the deep end with floaties on my arms."

I laughed out loud, and re-read the line a few times before moving on! Lorena Bathey also brings humour and memories together:

"Her hair was teased up to the level of a Jiffy Pop popcorn container,...."

Ah, yes, Jiffy Pop foil container just about ready to burst, before Mom removed it from the stove, cut the foil, and we dived in - nice memories, and an excellent description of a hair style!

The book description on the back cover, also part of the Goodreads summary, reads: "Step into the world of Vista Heights where you might recognize the women, or you might be one of them." And that happened to me as I read through the book. A couple of times I found myself thinking, "hmmm, that sounds like (insert name)" and "oh, my goodness, that's me!" Such is the gentle, yet powerful, word pictures created by this author. Talent, pure talent.

In my book reviews, I do not like to give books a `number rating', or a `star rating', rather I stay with word recommendations, (or not!). And fiction is so personal; each person experiences the story through their own life experiences. But with all that said, if I was to give "Beatrice Munson" a number rating, it would definitely be 5 out of 5, in my mind, without question, a 5 star rating. So, my recommendation to my readers is to definitely read "Beatrice Munson" by Lorena Bathey, and enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lorena Bathey's writing is MASTERFUL! February 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is going to be one of my favorite books that I have read in 2012! I dearly LOVED this book! You cannot chance missing this book!
It's time to meet the women of Vista Heights, in one of the cul-de-sac's! A delightfully fun and very refreshing read, yet full of depth! Hilarious at times! Brilliantly written! (This is one of the best written, best edited books I have come across!) Compassionate. The plot is so true-to-life. These women could be any one of us. Contemporary Fiction/Chic-Lit at it's finest! The story is touching, moving, and endearing, and yet goes much deeper than that in this book. Each time I would go and pick this book back up to read, it was like opening a brand new present for myself! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to you to take your mind off the daily, mundane things that tend to happen in life. Take a day or two and spend it with these women! You won't want to put it down. These women stay in your mind till you pick it back up.
The women in the cul-de-sac inside of Vista Heights are living a regular, nice, but mundane life in their little worlds, when someone new moves into the house that just sold on their street. A person who is about to change their lives, they just don't know it yet. One of the main characters, a woman named Marissa, recently divorced, has lived on this street since before her two children were born. She is very curious as to who it is moving into the house across the street. She is peeking through her curtains trying to see who it is that has just moved in, hoping she doesn't get caught! So, she bakes up a plan! Brownies! Later that afternoon she takes them over to meet the new owner. Oh, does she meet her! After introducing herself, she thought she recognized this woman. Sure enough! "Hello, I'm Beatrice Munson." Oh my! When she figures out that this was her High School nemesis, she is determined to befriend her in a new light.
Oh, Beatrice Munson! She had what everyone wanted back in High School when Marissa knew her. She had style, charisma, drive, dreams, and even the most handsome boyfriend in the school that Marissa always envied. And now, Beatrice still manages to have what everyone wants, even as grown adults. Beatrice has a style all her own that many people envy. She moves into Vista Heights, and takes the neighborhood by storm with most everything she does! I LOVE this character!
Not only do Marissa and Beatrice become really close friends, but they become very true and dear friends. ALL of the characters who befriend Beatrice Munson have their lives' change for the better, as Beatrice teaches them how, through life enriching occurrences, to the every day grind, how to have real meaning in the mundane. Beatrice puts a new spin on life for these women. She teaches them to go after their dreams and reach them! Not just dream them, but to really reach them, create them, LIVE them, and they do.
This book is a truly a charm of a read! I could not stop turning the pages of this book!
One of my favorite lines in this book is this:
"We have all been living in a state of perpetuity and Beatrice's paradigm of freedom just shone a spotlight on it."
