About the Author

Anne Stevenson Hobbs, curator of the Beatrix Potter collection at the V&A, has made a selection of Beatrix Potter's finest paintings and drawings, covering the whole range of her subjects and styles. As the creator of one of the world's most celebrated children's characters, Beatrix Potter has rarely been seen as a talented and versatile artist in her own right as in many ways the outstanding success of her 'little books' has overshadowed her other achievements. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

This is an outstanding book and a must-have for those who love Beatrix Potter's work. While most people think of Potter as the author of those delightful children's books, this book shows the full range of her work. Anne Stevenson Hobbs did an outstanding job in presenting the art in a very enjoyable manner - a real plus for those lucky enough to own this book.

A nice overview of Potter's work that includes studies of insects, nature, found objects. You really see a terrific artist here that I think is underestimated by artists who follow the school of serious content over technical ability. Always great to see the artistic power behind an illustrator known for children's books. When my cynical students sniff at lack of content and fluff as not being true art, I have them copy Potter's renderings of animals and her amazing drawing techniques. They end up with a new found respect. This book adds variation to the understanding of her work as well as an appreciation of her commitment to preservation of land, which was her greatest contribution. Nice plates, various studies in pen, graphic, watercolor and oil. Recommend.

Love, love, love this beautiful book. Someone showed it to me in my botany drawing class. I had to have it. Her fungi, mushrooms, flowers and rabbit world are excellent. Her botanical work is little known. Very inspiring for me in drawing. A must for fans of Potter and people who love to draw, want to draw and dream to draw and watercolor too!

I had this book a while back and lost it in a move so I just recently bought it again. It's a great book and gives great insight into Potter's world. It shows detailed sketches of all kinds of plants, animals and country scenes along with biographical information.
She was a really talented artist and I recommend this book to anyone who wants to become a better illustrator.

Sometimes books about artists will be heavy on the text and short on the artwork. Not so this version, with plenty of otherwise unfamiliar and incredibly diverse paintings and illustrations by the author of the Peter Rabbit stories. A really pretty, worthwhile book.

When I visited Beatrix Potter's home in England last year I was disappointed that the only paintings available to see were from her Benjamin Bunny series. She's a wonderful watercolorist, not just landscapes but botanicals. This book shows you the other side of her art and is full of the great watercolors that she did of the Lake District of England where she lived. If you have any interest in Beatrix Potter as an artist, this is the book to buy.

I borrowed this book from the library several years ago. It had long been out of print. I didn't want to take it back since I loved the wealth of Beatrix Potter illustrations. I have admired her artwork & books since my childhood.

I was delighted to find this lovely book on Amazon. The illustrations are beautiful. If you are a Beatrix Potter fan this book is a must have!

I am very happy to have this book. It is great to see beyond her well-known and well-loved pictures for her children's stories to her scientific work and her lovely landscapes, and to see how they all came together. The text is full of information about Beatrix and her work that I found most interesting. I would definitely recommend this book to both art lovers and friends of Peter Rabbit. Her scientific drawings are incredibly neat and precise, and her landscapes are a special bonus for lovers of the English Lake District.
